I'm gonna take your word for it, cap. I think its worth a weekend trip to give it a shot. Your responses answered pretty much all of my legitimate questions, and I can't thank you enough.

Soon to be in Shreveport,

BenA

I can confirm most of the things that cap posted concerning shreveport. Ive been a few times, but never stayed at the hotels so i dunno. We typically just drive back to dallas something the next afternoon. The last 2 times I went the horseshoe had the 20/40 game going, both times were weekends. The game seemed soft from what I could tell but I played mostly 2/5NL. The NL was ridiculous as everyone was shtfaced and playing like it. We played at El Dorado some too, but again, only 2/5NL. My friends played 1/2 that had a weak amount of money on the table, but the 2/5 game was fairly deepstacked.

Oh, and those suggesting winstar for limit are mistaken. Although the 4/8games are fun and full of n00bs im not sure its worth the trip from austin. rarely do they spread 10/20 (like never anymore) and when they do get 6/12 or 5/10 tables fired up they are typically very rocky. 4/8 has to be as profitable as those 2 at most times.

Im in a similar boat as you and am thinking that moving to a place like la or vegas might be the only way to play live for a living. OK and Shreveport just wont cut it.

This is the truth. I don't think the 10/20 has got going for quite some time. Used to be a great game . I would also stay away from the 5/10 or 6/12 game. Just not worth it vs the 4/8.

Don't forget the Choctaw casino just North of the border on 75, and as was already mentioned, the Winstar casino, just North of the border on 35.

Both have loose and passive 4/8 LHE and 1/2 NL full of young (18+) cocky jerks, timid check-the-nuts-on-the-river people, and a steady stream of novices who are literally in a casino playing poker for their very first time.

In my experience the limit games are spotty above 4/8, but at least at Winstar, there are always 2/5 NL games going, and on Friday nights and weekends, a table or two of 5/10 NL.

Also, if you look around, eventually I'm sure you can find honest to goodness home games and also "home games" (i.e. probably illegal card rooms run out of a rented room in an office park) playing at a variety of levels. A few years back in Austin one could find at least one game running every night of the week at various bars, homes, and private clubs, if one knew where to look. It scene can't have completely vanished.

As it is, I'd say it's definitely worth a visit if you're already in the area for some other reason.

[/ QUOTE ]

I go there to visit friends on occasion. Perhaps I'll think of it as a vacation more than a habit.

Thanks for the extra info on Shreveport. Maybe if I took a long enough trip (4 days or so) I could justify the 12 hours of driving.

Hell, form a group called Austin Online Poker Anonymous, and have have private house games. Maybe even rent one of these for a pseudo-online experience:

The link isn't working at the moment, but I'll try it later. And believe me, the thought has occured. These kind of games already exist, its just a matter of getting invited. I do want to avoid the ones run by businesses, because Austin is fairly adept at busting these organizations.

You can't make a living driving 10 hour round trip, and staying in a hotel playing 4-8.

My advice, get a job.

3-6-12 in Lake Charles (Isle of Capri) is an absolute donkfest. If you can beat .01/.02 online you can kill those games. Isn't Lake Charles closer to Austin than Shreveport? Better yet.....let's get Kinky elected and then maybe we can play in casinos here in Texas!

Lake Charles is no more than 5 to 5.5 hrs from Austin if you avoid Houston rush hour.

Vote for KINKY! Anyways, Lake Charles is only slightly closer, but thanks for letting me know. I'll check it out.
