Windows XP alert: Duplicate name on network???? help please
Everytime I start up my computer, running Windows XP, when you're suppose to log into your profile I get an alert that says: "A duplicate name exists on your network". Does anyone know what this is about? Whether it is a problem. My computer seems to have slowed quite a bit while starting up since this alert has been popping up, other than that its been good. Any info is appreciated.

The event log will have details regarding this, but it usually means exactly what it says. You have more than 1 computer with the same name on the same network.

Re: Windows XP alert: Duplicate name on network???? help please
go to your desktop and RIGHT click on my computer.
Go to properties. Click on the computer name tab. Next "to rename this computer or join a domain, click Change" Click the button that says change. The top box says computer name: Change whatever is in there ... maybe just add a 1 to the end and click Okay then reboot. Problem solved. (also you can do the same thing again to change it back) All this means is that there are two computers that have the same value in this box. This value is sort of like your street address. You can only have one house at 123 abc lane and the network you are on can use this name to direct traffic. |
