ok, a sex story to get things back on track:

First time I went to Thailand I went with a friend of mine who is 51 and is pretty near-sighted. This is fairly standard and easy. You can remove the sim card from your american phone and just pop it in there. Change the settings to english (they'll do this at MBK) and you are set.

No warranty and hard to get accessories for phones that haven't been released in the US yet are the two major concerns.

They are also pretty expensive, I paid $650 for mine but its like the most badass phone in history and isn't (or wasn't when i got it) available in the US yet.

I think this depends if the phone has GSM or not. If you buy a cheaper Nokia for example, it may not work in the USA. That was my experience at least. Depending if the phone has Tri-band, Quad-band, CDMA support etc, results could vary. Here's is some interesting related info on GSM and unlocked phones.
