Uh... the ZJ jokes are pretty old and not funny anymore.
ZJ, I haven't completely forgiven you, but I won't let old issues influence my current views. As to your post... Thanks for this summary. I enjoyed reading it and feel more informed after doing so. I hope your assesments are correct. - Nick |

Don't know about you, but I'm waiting for supporting statements from MeeJustin, Mee2Justin, ZeeBeeJustin, CiCiJustin, and GigliJustin.
I also expect once they are all in this thread we will see a spike in high stakes cash games to compensate. |

I am not a lawyer, but I don't think the fact that the act specifically leaves out a re-definition of "unlawful internet gambling" is a "theory". I think congress would have to specifically legislate that point. In fact, earlier versions of the bill had specific language which attempted to update the Wire Act to include internet gambling. This language was dropped. The courts should see this when they are determining intent of the law.

A way to solve our current government problems:
When either party has control of both the house and senate, members of that party should have to open up dicussion and voting on at least 5 other bills while voting on any bill in order to handicap their advantage. |

I like ZJ's summary, and certainly hope it is right. One thing that bothers me, though, is that a lot of people seem so joyful that the wording of the wire act has not changed. While that's true, that's not necessarily a cause of long-term rejoicing. While I certainly hope the Republicans lose their majority, that's not at all a sure thing. And if not, how hard would it be for Frist or any other Senator to say "that bill was a good first step, and we needed to pass it quickly. Now let's define just what gambling is." It actually could be another Republican Senator who would want to run against Frist and shore up his Christian Right credentials as well. So unless we can defeat the Republicans in November, I could certainly see things getting worse before they get better. And if they ever did define the wire act to include poker, then it would be over. So for me to really feel any kind of optimism, the first step would have to be a change of government.
