Please buy an audio/video receiver that supports HDMI and the two new 7.1 home theatre sound standards (Dolby HD and DTS-HD or something like that.)

I recommend Harman/Kardon.

This makes me ill.

Please get yourself a decent-level Harman Kardon receiver, and some decent speakers.

I got an Onkyo 803B on closeout from Fry's for $499. Plenty of power for my new speakers, and it has HDMI video switching. It's only pass-through though, not upconversion, but I have an upconverting DVD player and digital cable HD comes in at 720p anyway, so I didn't bother paying for upconversation. I love it so far, it really rocks.

Monoprice is great for cables as Astro mentioned. lol at people who pay $$$ for 3 ft. Monster cables.

Okay, why an HDMI reciever? My TV (samsung DLP 61") has two HDMI inputs, and anything sound related it sends through the fiber optic to my reciever. What does 720 vs 1080 have to do with sound??????

As far as cables (quick answer for anyone who cares/doesn't know) digital is an all on/all off system. generally, it either will work or won't. if it works, spending a million dollars on a cable will change nothing. Try to think of it like your printer cable/USB. Does anything print nicer if you spent more on the cable?

Any receiver with HDMI will have support for the newest sound standards.
