The bill passed by all but 2, so it was voted on equally by both sides of the aisle.

[/ QUOTE ]
Because it was attached by Republicans to a must-pass piece of national security legislation.

After thinking about this a little bit, it is actually encouraging. Even though there is an even split, I think the people against the ban are probably more motivated.

On the Republican side, although 47% are in favor and 33% oppose, the 47% would have voted Republican anyway. Now a certain percentage of that 33% will now vote Democrat or not at all.

I think you would need to see what perecentage of people polled feel very strongly about being able to gamble/play poker online. It might be the #1 issue for many on here but I dont feel its a big enough issue for the general population to switch political allegances.

Personal disclosure: I consider myself Conservative / Libertarian and am not religious.

Interesting side note: I read a conservative based messageboard. The legislation topic has been talked about a bit on there and you all may be surprised that most people who have commented think the legislation is pretty stupid and another example of government reaching too far into our personal lives.

Min,

Right off the top of my head, any push to restrict the right of a law abding citizen to own a gun has been from Democrats. I live in a state (Massachusetts), under a Democrat Party dominated legislature, where you cant gamble in a casino or have a poker room. You can be pulled over by the police and fined for not wearing your seat belt. The legislature here ignored their original promise and a public referendum vote to reduce income taxes so that we might actually get a chance to keep more of our hard earned money. They know how to spend it better than we can. I will get you more examples but at least know that it is far from garbage. Both parties can and will restrict freedoms. This time it was something that was important to online poker players. Maybe in the past it was something else that didnt matter to you.

[/ QUOTE ] I`ll take seat belt laws(although disagree) over a future right wing christian totalitarian state any day.Its a matter of the lesser of two evils.Just my two cents.

Actually these numbers are very good for us. Remember what the government is about to do is take away the right of a large number of people to do something that they enjoy doing. In addition, they are creating extra work for the banks and certain government agencies, and they are running contrary to the WTO.

To do all that you would think that they should have at least a clear-cut, solid majority behind them.

This poll shows they do not.

First, it already has passed so they don't need the overwhelming majority support.

Second, the poll doesn't tell a whole lot. If they took a survey and asked if smoking should be illegal; if I'm not a smoker than I'd probably just say sure. It wouldn't make any difference to me and would probably be better for me. That's just the way people react. Now, if you got 10% of the people together in a petition and sent it to all the politicians saying we're voting you out..that would carry wait. Of course, you'll never get that many people. But, if we could get 10, 20, 30 thousand people, maybe that would be a voice. It's possible if it gets organized through a website or something. The internet can be a powerful mechanism if done correctly. Moaning on a message board won't help. This may keep us informed, but it won't effect change.

Would you all STOP with this Democrat/Republican baloney! The bill passed by all but 2, so it was voted on equally by both sides of the aisle.

I don't know how people keep saying this. Do you even know what happened? Yes you have the voting record correct, however, the vote was not on internet gambling....it was on a Ports Security bill and the Republicans particularly Bill Frist attached the internet gambling act to this port security act over the objections of many Democrats most noticably the feamle senator from Nevada (I believe her name is Berkely) and despite thier objections the Democrats voted in favior of this bill because it was a must pass port security bill and had to be passed. It was the underhandedness in attaching the internet gambling ban to this bill that caused it to be passed and this was done by Republicans.

Once you start with the mindset that taking away certain freedoms is ok as long as they dont take away things more important...well that was the day you started on a path to lose the more important things (in this case online poker).

Oh and this country wont be a future right wing christian totalitarian state...the vast majority of people such as ourselves do not want that. But you know..."great to feed off the fear".

Some people certainly do want to take away guns. I've never owned or fired a gun in my life. Once you allow them to take away one thing...
