Please stop saying that all republicans or all christians did this. As I am both and am of course strongly against this. Look, I understand you cheer for the Republicans like a Football team, but the Democrats were the only ones against them inserting language dealing with internet gambling into a homeland security bill.
Fact: Bill Frist (R-Tennessee) is the one responsible and his Republican minions allowed it to happen. So, sorry if you get your feelings hurt, but the Republicans did this to poker players. Remember in November. |

Please stop saying that all republicans or all christians did this. As I am both and am of course strongly against this. Just as there are democrats and non-christians with various beliefs there are the same with republicans and christians. You just make yourself look like an immature stereotypical [censored]. [/ QUOTE ] Things like that can happen only in a country where christian fundamentalism is a way of life and christian fundamentalists actually are country leaders. |

[/ QUOTE ] (1) Frist inserted the bill. He is a Republican. (2) Republicans and the religious right support legislating morality. You may be "both", but without Frist's (Republican) need to pander to fundamentalist christians for votes, this simply would never have been introduced, let alone passed. |

interesting tidbit:
apparently jack abramoff was behind the bill's failure last year, before he got busted for corrupting the republicans. online poker is good for B&M casinos, and therefore good for abramoff's casino friends. so it stands to reason that republicans want to come down hard on one of his pet projects, as a way of distancing themselves from his corrupting influence. screw you, jack!! (oh, and OP - all the republicans in congress *did* do this. at least the ones that hadn't gone home already. thus, it is factually correct to say so.) |

Actually Abramoff waas representing some sort of eLottery at the time that was not exempt in that bill. Ironically that same interest he supposedly stalled the bill for last time got its carve out in this one.
As to who is the driving force behind this see this site for the Family Research Council: http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=AL06I12&f=BC05G01 "The Road Ahead The homosexual agenda in schools, illegal immigration, defunding the ACLU, underage girls being taken across state lines for abortions, state marriage amendments, human cloning, and Internet gambling. These are just a few challenges that, together, we must meet head on." It's groups like the one above that drive a lot more emails and phone calls then these sites could ever imagine. Their aganeda is to impose their narrow moral view of the world on everyone around them. They are intolerant bastards at their core. The Republicans love to pander to them. The only reason Frist even cared about this bill is because he thought it would play well with the religious right, a major force in the Republican party and as a favor to Leach who convinced Frist he could help him in the Iowa caucuses (sp?) in 2008. On the other side you have the Democrats who don't have the balls to stand up to this nonsense so they just ride along. |
