Definition of "canon" from Wikipedia:

[ QUOTE ]
The Western canon is a canon of books, music and art (and specifically one with very loose boundaries) that is thought by many to have been highly influential in shaping Western culture. It is a list of the greatest works with significant literary and artistic merit. The selection of a canon is important to the theory of educational perennialism and the development of high culture.

[/ QUOTE ]

As you can see, this narrows the field down a bit. Games like Sonic 2 or WWF games do not make the cut. Only highly original, influential, and truly great games are "canon".

EA Sports PGA European Tour game was sweet with courses such as Valderrama, Crans-sur-Sierre and Wentworth. It was also the first golf console game that I'm aware of that offered match play.

I don't think so...they're not terribly significant if you look at the entire videogaming landscape. If you're looking at strictly Genesis games, yes, but we're looking at videogames as a whole. Some systems may have only one game that is truly canonical.

NHL 94

I was godly with Larry Murthy (a defender in Pittsburg). Come from the left and go right. And then hold on to C while you aim to the left. Instant score.

Sonic 2 was great too but I could never collect everything which sort of bugged me.
