Let me try to salvage this for BBV.
Why did you last have to use a payphone? The situation was most likely some sort of horrific beat. I doubt you were calling up your girlfriend to ask her if she could meet you at the soda shop for a malt. The last time I used a payphone was when I was in Paris, calling a friend for directions to his place. SO that's not a beat. But the time before that way many years prior when I was in high school, calling my parents for a ride. So that's pretty much a beat, heh.

the beat is actually paying to call your 'rents for a ride. The way I did it in high school was call collect, and when it tells you to say your name, you say, "mom come pick me up" and hang up.

true payphone ballers would seek out COCOTs, dial a 1800number, get them to hang up on you, and when that dial tone sounds again you get to make a free call

Well, the second one was made with a modified tone dialier, but same difference. Ah, the glory days, er.. or not.
