There's -EV and there's -EV. Yes I'm sure they knew that it gave the player an advantage, and thus statistically they expected to lose some money from it in the short term (though perhaps not much, because the average player who does not know strategy will play a break-even game with 2:1 BJ), but they would calculate that in the long-term it would prove profitable. What they did not expect - or at least did not want - was a rampaging horde of EV maniacs descending on their casino multi-tabling perfect strategy BJ for precisely 1 hour a day for 3 days.

Happily for them they were forewarned of this impending disaster and got out in time, promo budget intact. I guess the guy or girl they pay to monitor the forums got a payrise today.

It is definitely possible that they underestimated the level of interest. But then again a site like mansion basically gave money away on the steelers game last thursday in hopes of attracting more players. WPEX has a site that generates zero rake. So it is not out of the realm that party poker does not mind giving away some money for 1 hour for 3 days in hopes of generating more interest.

Perhaps they will reinstate the promo with limitations to prevent abuse but still allowing the average joe to capitalize on the promo.
