I generally check-raise top-pair flops with no flush draws in order to push out competition. I think this play would have been appropriate here, since you probably are ahead at this juncture in the hand and you want to push the competition out. Check-raising will force your opponents to make an unprofitable call or fold. I like to bet hands that I want to see a free card on, like flush draws. That way everyone will check to me after the flop.
