Re: signature songs
I'm not a huge classic rock fan so I think that qualifies me as a good judge of what the general public feels are the signature songs of certain bands (not necessarily their best work). Here's how I feel on a few that were argued somewhere or another in this threa, just naming the first song that pops into my head:
Skynyrd - Freebird U2 - With or Without You Prince - Purple Rain The Clash - Rock the Casbah Radiohead - Karma Police White Stripes - Seven Nation Army REM - Religion New Order - Bizzare Love Triangle Public Enemy - Fight the Power Wu-Tang - C.R.E.A.M. HEart - Crazy on You Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated SMashing Pumpkins - 1979 David Bowie - Lets Dance Roy Orbison - Crying Huey Lewis - If This Is It Elton John - Rocket Man Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit |

Re: signature songs

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] GDAlso a firendly-but adamant disagree. Though Darkstar is def more under the radar than most, I would doubt that most fans would consider it their sig song. Considerinf its not really a song but a jam. While Playing is a great song I dont know why u feel it represents the Dead. I think for the fans, the song most enjoyed at the shows was a good Terrapin or Dew (obv something Jerry). However, for this thread I believe Truckin fits it the best. [/ QUOTE ] Well...I doubt we will persuade each other, and it's-all-good-etc., but as someone who saw the band ~240 times between 1981 and 1995, I can tell you straight up Dark Star is their signature song: it is the song that best summarizes their sound, their improvisational skills, and their "reach" as a band. Like an acid trip, the song moves from structure to chaos, where it lingers for a while and where things get good and weird before moving back to the safety of structure. Dark Star is the very essence of the Grateful Dead. The opening sentence of the Wikipedia entry on Dark Star says pretty much the same thing: ""Dark Star" is a song by the Grateful Dead, and widely considered to be the group's signature song." Casual fans may not consider this to be their signature song, and in fact casual fans may not even like it, but I would expect any Deadhead to tell you that musically, Dark Star was it. [/ QUOTE ] After reading a few articles ala the net I agree with you. I was thinking along the lines that if you ask the common person what song the Dead is known for, they would say Truckin. Personally Ive seen 50+ shows in the late 80's early 90's. Never a big darkstar fan, aside from the uniqueness of seeing it when they busted it out. Personal favorites Terrapin, Morning Dew, Birdsong, a jammin Scarlet/fire or China/rider, Jaxtraw, cassidy, hell in a bucket. Never really got into the bluesy/countryish tunes. Damn them were good times |
