Hello All,
First, I'm posting this question here because at least some of you live in Vegas, and I didn't see anywhere more appropriate to ask. I'd like to live in Vegas for a short time (6 months-year). Mostly for poker, and just the experience of living someplace except Ohio. And, I have no specific job skills. No degree, etc. So, my 2 questions are: 1.Where are the best places (least torturous) places to work in Vegas? ie. If you know what you know now, and you were dropped off in Vegas, where would you work. 2.Where would you live on your meager income? The criteria is that it has to be safe, and as close to the poker games as possible. I'm pretty sure that low-rent apartments have been discussed before, but I didn't find anything. I'm probably going to get flamed for this post. Please take my questions seriously though. I'd really like to know if Vegas is an option for me. Thanks, Steve |

1. get a job at a restaurant, they're always hiring. Or pick up a sheriffs card and do security somewhere
three of my roomates have ZERO job skills: 1. One is a server at social house in TI, he avg about $250/night and has some server skills 2. One is a server at an upscale italian restaurant, avg $150/night, again no special skills involved 3. One is a host/security at a strip club...no exp whatsoever you can find jobs if you interview well and have a good work ethic 2. meager income look into the Northwest side of las vegas, maybe 15 minutes from the strip around the Ann road area...other meager places include directly west of the strip as well as parts of near east of the strip |

I hear valets make pretty good scratch. Avoid construction, it's too damn hot in the desert.

Dude, shut up and let the man live his own life. Michael Dell doesn't have a degree. Bill gates doesn't have a degree. If you're really business smart, you can co farther on your own than living with the herd.

Bill Gates never had to ask an online forum how to get a job with zero background.

I'm not asking "how" to get a job. I'm asking what decent jobs are available in Vegas.
It's a rather different place than most cities, and I figured there might be jobs that I might not know about. Steve |

There are a metric flipton of no/low skill jobs in tourist cities. Someone has to ask if you want fries with that, someone has to push the "GO" button the roller coasters, and someone has to change the urinal cakes. Every Taco Bell has a HELP WANTED sign on the wall. You ain't gonna have trouble finding *A* job.
The trick is getting no-skill jobs that pay better than $8/hr. So uhhh... you're >=21 and have no job skills at all? If you ain't 21, Vegas ain't a fun place. If you are 21, surely you've got some work experience. |

Do you have any sort of criminal record? This is an important point. In Vegas, most casino type jobs require you to get a sherrif's card. It a sort of employment ID. They do a criminal background check for this. If you can't get one, you're cut off from a large chunk of the jobs in Vegas, and put yourself in competition with the already large selection of miscreants in Vegas who can't get a sherrif's card. So if your record isn't clean, do move to Vegas.
Assuming you have a clean record, do you have any money? Do you have a car, with WORKING air conditioning, capable of making it to Vegas? You'll need to have enough money to float yourself for a few months. Ideally, you'll have enough money to get you through something like dealer school (we're not talking a degree here. Apparently after several weeks in dealer school, you may be good enough to land a break in job.). A car in pretty much a necessity for life in vegas. If you're going to do the Vegas thing, DO the vegas thing. You can work in Target or Home Depot anywhere. If you going to Vegas, become a dealer. Your first year will be tough, but look at how many casinos are going up in the next few years. They're going to need LOTS of dealers. If you can stick it out, you can make decent living in Vegas without a degree. |
