Default 500gb mp3 player - my invention

Tell me what's wrong with this idea:

New trend is combo cell phone/mp3 players. Cell phones are capable of getting internet service at 2+mb/s d/l speeds. Forget trying to fit high capacity drives and flash memory into smaller and smaller packages. Forget having to add to your mp3 player every time you add to your library on your PC. My yet-to-be-named invention is a cell phone/music player combo which STREAMS from your pc music library. Think Slingbox but for audio instead of video.

Maybe I will call it the eyezPod.

Tell me why this won't be the coolest thing ever.

Also, as part of my implementation strategy, I will parlay my success by shorting Sandisk/Samsung/et al.

Actually not a bad idea, would be fairly easy, a java client for the phone, and a simple program to run on the PC, battery life, and being able to hook the phone up to something other than headphones would be a concern.

Well now that you have given your idea with no copyright to tons of dishonest poker players, you are screwed and your "invention" will be copyrighted by others. Whoooops.
I like the idea, but what about when you have bad reception, in the subway, in a tunnel, on an airplane, etc etc. Would you have a small drive (maybe 1gb?) so that people could still use them on planes and in the subway and such?

What do you mean? You think people might steal my idea? No way. I trust you guys.

Planes/subways would be a problem. Perhaps some amount of local storage would be needed. And it could buffer a couple minutes for general random dead zones.

So this might not be a 100% replacement for traditional players, but it might be something that takes 85% of mp3 player usage and makes it much better. And you would think as time goes on, cell phone coverage only gets better and better.

Well, OP's post alone might be enough to maintain rights to a patent, so you don't even need to trust us. I'm not sure if that it's even something that could be patented. A lot of things can be with enough money. Also, I'd surprised if this wasn't currently being done by someone, under development or some company already figured out this is not yet feasible. I know my roommate in college used to talk about doing this exact thing with his cell phone. He's done quite a bit with streaming video and audio.

An interesting tidbit he informed me of was that the porn industry is what has driven a lot of the internet technology, streaming for one.

I think the problem with this idea is the $80/month phone bill.

Badger,

"Well, OP's post alone might be enough to maintain rights to a patent"

That might be the stupidest, most uninformed thing I've ever read anywhere.

What is it that compels people who have absolutely no clue wtf they are talking about to write crap like that?

Yeah pricing is a definite hurdle. Not sure how to address that. If anyone offers a solution, I'll transfer $20 to you on Stars after I make my first million.

El D,
Patent Law aside - what do you think of my idea? Wouldn't a device like this be super cool?

Entrepreneurily Yours,

Uh, a post on an internet forum is definately not enough to be awarded a patent. In the US, patents work on a first to invent basis, thus OP would have to be the first to create the player. In Canada, it works on a first to file basis, which a post on an internet forum does not fall under.
