Pakistan and Bin Laden - Major News Story?
Apparently Bin Laden has sanctuary in Pakistan, not just practically speaking, but as in, "would not be taken into custody, as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen.".
Former White House official in charge of counter-terrorism, Richard Clarke says, "What this means is that the Taliban and al Qaeda leadership have effectively carved out a sanctuary inside Pakistan.". This is announced the same day as President Bush's speech on terrorism where he focuses on the need to take Bin Laden seriously. He was also quoted today as saying that the U.S. was working with its allies to "to deny terrorists the enclaves they seek to establish in ungoverned areas across the world"." The agreement that Pakistan has made with the Al-Qaeda and Taliban supporting tribesmen of the Waziristan region also includes provisions for freeing Taliban prisoners, returning weaponry, and increasing funding for development of this region. Apparently the present administration supports this truce and will be sending additional aid. Mission Accomplished? Why isn't this a major news story? What am I missing here? It's not very prominent compared to the major news items of the day: Bush's speech, Japanese Princess has male baby, video of Steve Irwin's final moments, et. al. The following links are from ABC news blog, Mercury news and MSNBC. The MSNBC story is on the front page in the International section. It claims that militants will not be harbored but that doesn't match with the quotes regarding Bin Laden from the ABC news blog article that were posted above. Links 1 2 3 raisins |

Bin Laden is a CIA patsy. Don't you get it. It's all a joke. Government isn't there to protect you.

Re: Pakistan and Bin Laden - Major News Story?
Oh man did you hear the interview with the guy from Popular Mechanics in charge of debunking 911 conspiracy theories?
It was on the Charles Goyette show and it was so damn funny even though it was about a real thing and very scary if you think about it. So Goyette asks how are we sure of the hijackers' identities, and the PM guy says they did DNA tests. Then Goyette asks where they got the DNA with which to match the crime scene DNA. The PM guy then realizes he's caught in a lie and tries to confuse the issue for like 5 minutes, and finally Goyette realizes he's not gonna get an answer cause the guy is totally BSing and doesn't even have his lies straight, so Goyette just hangs up on him and says he's welcome back anytime he can actually answer the question. 5 years to get their lies straight, and they can't even come close. Ugh. |

You meant to link something else, I hope? Garbage, garbage, garbage. Oh no! He "predicted" that a man who already attacked the World Trade Center and whose organization was ACTIVELY PLANNING ANOTHER ATTACK was going to attack again! What incredible foresight. And calling him a "CIA patsy" is completely ridiculous. The idiots in charge during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan thought it was in their best interests to help the resistence. They were wrong, and we're paying the price. Do you have any evidence (not some goofball like Alex Jones) that backs this claim up? |

Why isn't this a major news story? [/ QUOTE ] Because this is a 'dirty little secret' that everybody knows or strongly suspects already. I'd guess that if certain elements in the Pakistani government could get a clear shot at Bin Laden they'd try to capture or kill him but they do not have the strength, nor are they of one mind to, invade the tribal areas. |

Why isn't this a major news story? [/ QUOTE ] If more american's were whacky conspiracy nuts then it would be the lead story. But since the rest of us live in the "real world" it just won't cut it. Sorry to burst your little bubble. |

[/ QUOTE ] I fail to see how Bin Laden hiding out in an area that is acknowledged to be practically ungoverned by Pakistan, and sympathetic to his cause, is fodder for conspiracy theorists. I think it's a legitimate question... why hasn't anyone gone in after him? Will Pakistan not allow it? Are we stretched too thin as it is? Are we already in Pakistan with special forces, as we were in Cambodia and Laos? Or is Bin Laden already dead, not worth pursuing, in bed with the CIA, or one of the other 'fringe' theories? NT |

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, I can see that Kate Couric's new job and the photos of the Cruise baby are of more signifigance for the real world than this. By the way, this story is not about some CIA - Osama conspiracy but rather the inability of the Pakistani government to control the Taliban supporting tribesmen. The effects of this truce, in the eyes of this humble observer, are substantial: no or minimal pursuit for bin Laden and Zawahiri, an increase in money to Waziristan - some of it U.S., and a possible home base for Taliban insurgents active in Afghanistan. What does conspiracy have to do with any of the above? raisins |
