'Cuz they feel like they just got owned so they want to make it look like the caller is actually the bad player, not them.

It's a pretty nasty activity imo.

They feel like their bluff is an advanced play rather than chip spewage but they aren't quite advanced enough to know who to bluff and who not to...amd they have just been owned by someone they feel is inferior.

100% of my successful bluff-catches with ace-high (which are rare and usually successful, probably meaning I'm not making them often enough) are followed by villain asking "you called with ace high?"

IMO they're trying to offload the embarrassment they feel after you caught them red-handed.

Sample live 4/8 hand (repurposed from my Vegas trip report):

[ QUOTE ]
...a guy who looks like a 65-year-old hippie two seats to my left decides he doesn't like me raising his CO, button or blind. He proceeds to do the coldcall/donk/raise dance...And it's not just my raises he doesn't like - he's an equal-opportunity button LAG.

So, a few blind battles later, I'm OTB with A9s and raise. SB folds, hippie guy calls. (Did I mention he hums out loud while he's in a hand?) Flop misses me completely with all undercards, and as expected, he donks. I call. Turn nada, he bets again. I turn to him and say, "I think I'm gonna look you up." Call. River, nothing again, board completely uncoordinated, he bets one more time and as promised, I call.

I flip my hand over. He looks at my cards. He looks at the board. He looks at his cards (in that oh-so-endearing lift-them-a-foot-off-the-table stylee). He looks at the board again. To my amazement, he actually shows his J9o (no pair, and no draw that wasn't busted by the turn).

He finally looks at me, as if I'm insane, and asks, "You called down with ace high?"

I smile. "I told you I was gonna look you up."

Maybe he didn't hear me say that, in effect, he could save himself eight bucks by not betting the river. Maybe he didn't understand. Maybe he didn't think I had the guts.

I add, "I've gotta keep you honest..."

Short answer- they made a bad play, but they're too hard headed to think they're bad so obviously it was because there opponent was too stupid. Also they're mad, but to dumb to realize that maybe they should be mad and themselves for making a bad play.

Recently I had a flushdraw on the flop, raised it and got a bunch of callers, then bet the turn with a whole bunch of outs (gutshot + overs + flushdraw) and all but one call-station folded. I misread the river for a diamond instead of a heart thinking my nut flush came in, so I bet and get called by an underpair to the entire board. I then proceeded to make a big deal about it to try to cover up my own retardedness. Even so I still looked retarded, I guess.

I love it when this happens, esp. live. I remember check/calling this clown with KQ on an ace high board. After the ineveitable "you called me with K high?" I said "are you kidding? I had the nut no pair. I thought about value betting."

I reraised on the button after the flop with a nut flush draw and two overs to the board after one guy raised and another called, the whole table owned me after I made my flush. (this was limit too) I need to learn to play
