Didn't have any stats on villain, but if I had to guess, he's probably playing somewhere around 40/15. I've been in a few hands with him that haven't gone past the flop.

Why not check and call a river bet. His flop late call IMO is either a flopped monster or UI overcards.

he could easily be the tricky type to raise with a draw, and should know you'd have a tough time calling down with more of your range (since he knows that you know a 9 is easily in his range... that is if he thinks). It's either this and check behind river, or check here and then call any non 8,J,Q,K river.

There's a couple of draws out there + he might have a hand like 55 + you don't want to see overcards fall. So I think it's ok. But I wouldn't make a habit of it.
