Re: Advantageous to buy in short in PLO?
Great answer from Ribbo
I think it definitely has it upside and its downside but I like it because of the Greenstein points. The edge is huge if you can play well and can maximise your return per buy in much easily and it allows loose calls from opponents such as..... No advantages. Unless you're a losing player, in which case you will lose less. [/ QUOTE ] I disagree with this. While I'm 100% certain that the advantages are next to (if not less than) zero if you play like Ribs does, there are many advatages to buying in short. Back when I was first starting out in PLO with my tiny $20 bankroll, there were no tables at PokerStars between the .01/.02 and .10/.25 levels. I felt I had little choice but to take shots at PLO25 if I wanted to move up stakes in my lifetime (I had long promised to my wife that I would never use a single penny of our money to fund my bankroll so I had to win my way up). I ended up having a lot of experience buying in short. In addition to what Greenstein said, there is the fact that deeper stacked players will often willfully ignore you (not so much to their peril, but definitely to your benefit) either because they are more interested in the other deep stacks, or because they assume that you're an ignorant noob. Basically, a whole new class of opponent errors opens up to you. These benefits are short lived though because they will realize you're not that stupid pretty quickly (well maybe not at PLO25, but definitely PLO100+). But if you make sure to focus in on the right tables and play against players you're confident haven't seen you play before, this can be a fun way to take occaisional shots at levels you're not quite staked for. It can also be an extra fun way to parlay a small winning session into an impressive winner. However, it's a crappy way to learn to become a better player and will put a definite ceiling on your playing potential if you make this your standard approach to PLO. |

You get a little more action, being shorter. [/ QUOTE ] I'm 5'1'' and I get barely any action at all! What is your source for this? |

Re: Advantageous to buy in short in PLO?
If you have $200 in 5/10PL game and can get almost all in prelop with 4 or more callers you are almost +EV any decent hand. I hate these short stacks and I see many of them as huge winners on my PTO database because of this.

[/ QUOTE ] I think he means "almost any decent hand is +EV if you can get all-in vs. 4 or more callers", or "any decent hand is almost always +EV if you can get ot all-in vs. 4 or more callers". As for what hands he means, all the obvious ones that everyone plays: double suited 4 runs/1 gappers, 3 runs with a suited A, suited big pairs with connectors, etc. |

Re: Advantageous to buy in short in PLO?
I like buying in for 40-50BB too. I can usually get all my money in on the turn and not have to worry about the the river being a scare card and then facing a tought decision. people seem to pay off short stacks more because they don't take them as serious.
