It's not just in poker.

I'd bet a lot of money that over 75% of losing players think they're a great player. Brings to mind quotes such as I'm "up a little" or at least "about even".

[/ QUOTE ]

I've always said that I'm "up a little". After hearing so many people say that "up a little" means down I started keeping records (Both live and online). Turns out I'm up a little. Yay!

I have yet to meet a poker player that didn't believe he was good.

This is very true. Nobody wants to say they are "bad" or "below average".

How many losing players think they are good players? To what extent can a person decieve themself into thinking they play better than they do?

[/ QUOTE ]

Over the long haul, most players are losers. The rake slowly eats away at everyone....

Less than 10% are true winners, with 5% doing especially well. It's the cardrooms who win...

Personally, I think I suck at poker, and manage to prove that to myself every time I go online.

Do you have an authoritative cite for this? My Poker Tracker database says that in the games I've played 40% of the players come out ahead.

Some of my relatives talk about how they 'win' at craps and blackjack (non card counters). There are also like millions of people who talk about how they win at scratch tickets. lol

[/ QUOTE ]

I can't even remember the last time I talked to someone who gambles who hasn't told me that they are "winning" or "breaking even." Nobody ever loses and they built The Strip by giving away money to everyone.

I finally figured it all out a few years ago. I kept accurate records of casino gambling. I had hit a few lucky slots (like $100 wins), but I never really played slots. I'd drop a few $'s when I was walking around in Vegas just for entertainment value. Well, one day, I decided to tally my results for slots and I was actually surprised that I was losing money at slots. All those little $1-2 losses added up over the years. At that point, I realized that if I could fool myself, and I keep records, it's so easy for someone that doesn't keep records to fool himself.

Default What if a losing player asks you for advise?

This thread reminds me of something that happened to me a few years ago. There was this total fish that was obviously a losing player. One day, he was losing (as usual). I went on a bathroom break and I happened to run into him there. He complained about his bad luck, but then he surprised me by basically asking if I thought he could beat the game. I know I get money from fish, so I said something like, "Yeah, you seem like you're a good player. You've been taking some tough beats. Just keep at it." Part of me thinks that's a little coldhearted.

After that experience, I told myself that if a friend came up and asked me seriously if he could beat a game, I'd tell him the truth. This guy wasn't a friend and he probably wouldn't have believed me if I had told him the truth. With random fish, I figure I might as well feed the fire and sympathize with their "bad luck."

On a sidenote, when I played live, I used to say stuff like, "Nobody beats these games." This is just gambling.

Did you stop and think that maybe this guy was reaching out for some help? Maybe he's a compulsive gambler who needs to be advised to seek help.

Some people, when they find a lost wallet, will return it to the owner intact. Others keep the money and say finders keepers.
