Default Live Final Table....Did I deserve this abuse?

The Situation:

Local live Tourney (£10 buy-in - very small stakes) with around 40 entrants. There are 8 left at final table where I am 3rd/4th in chips. I have around 30k with 1k/2k blinds. Top 4 are paid.

There is a player in the cut off with just 2k left (he lost an all-in call a couple of hands ago).

The hand:

Me: Big blind
Abuser: Small blind

The cards are dealt and it folds around to cut-off guy with 2k left. He calls and goes all-in. Button folds small blind (abuser) makes up the blind. I see Ks 5s and check.

Flop: Jd 7s 3s

I now have flush draw and when small blind checks i check also. At this stage I am aware that myself and the abuser (small blind) are checking down in the hope of eliminating the third player.

Turn: Jd 7s 3s 6h

No spade and no King. Both abuser (small-blind) and myself again check.

River: Jd 7s 3s 6h 4c

I luckily manage to hit gutshot straight and now feel that I am ahead in the hand. I am aware that we have both been checking down in order to eliminate the other player, but now I have a made hand I decide to place a small bet. I always understood the unwritten rule as you only bet when you make your hand, not that you don't bet at all.

I bet 3k into the 6k pot (min bet 2k).

At this point the small blind gets very angry stating that I shouldn't be betting at all, but he then raises me up to 10k.

I thought that he migght be playing me with the 5-8 nuts and so just call. He shows J9o and I take the pot.

This guy then goes ballistic saying " Haven't you ever heard of checking to eliminate a player?" I anserwed that I was fully aware of the practice but also understood that you then bet when your hand is made.

I also pointed out that I thought he should have bet me out on the flop when he hit his Jacks. I also mentioned that I only committed him to 3k at most, he chose to put 10k in. He was extrememly aggressive and when he bust-out the next hand with AK he stormed off mouthing various obscenities in my direction.

Was I out of order? Should I have just checked?

Thanks for any advice guys. Keep up the good work.

Eight left, money at four, you do what you want with your chips. The aim is to get more chips, not eliminate a short stack. Your villian was out of line, but there's no need to tell him that if he's willing to throw chips your way.

That's exactly the point I made. Thanks.

the fact that he was mad at you was a strong tell that you had him beat. the only thing you did wrong was not re-raising him all in. If he's got the nuts, so be it.

I hope you laughed to yourself when he did this? and nothing wrong in what you did.

I thought this straight after. Although I was very happy with my return for the hand anyway. Especially as it hit me luckily on the river and initially only wanted to extract 3k.

I'm not a weak or timid person myself so I basically told him in no uncertain terms to F*@k-off. He carried on walking.

I basically wanted some reassurance that I fully understood this practice as it seemed a few around the table sympathised with him a little although they were happy with me to move my chips as I saw fit.

I knew I was right though. Cheers guys.
