In my noobish opinion this one comes down to whatever read you have on your opponent. I think his playstyle is the biggest determining factor in a situation like this.

Yup, reads would certainly help here. Vs. a standard loose-passive donk, I just fold the flop. If he's somewhat aggressive, I might raise the flop.

I think the river fold's fine.

Bet the turn, he's either going for a c/raise with a real strong hand letting you get away, was bluffing and will fold or held a marginal hand slightly better/worse than than yours that you get to a cheap showdown. By checking you opened yourself up to the river bet that put you to the tough decision and based on the card you had to fold
