Re: Cardplayer: Psuedo-Journalism?
Cardplayer isnt a magazine like Time or Newsweek, its an Ad Rag like your local shop and save, its meant to be given away for free in all casino's and on the web site, to draw attention to the advertisers. Its articles Pimping advertisers is no different than the shop and save giving a glowing review to a restaurant that advertises in it. Cardplayer is what it is, a source of tournament info, and results with some strategy. Anything extra should be taken with a huge grain of salt... They cater to Harrah, never covering the dealer strife, or player complaints they cater to Full tilt because it offsets the costs of getting WSOP content. Never assume they are the authority on anything they are about providing enough content to get you to see the ads, nothing more. They arent a journalistic mag they are a promotional product pure and simple. Can you subscribe to it, sure but why? most of the articles are on the net. If they go to online subscription for their content I for one will pass. Free is about all cardplayer is worth.....

A magazine that could provide more would be a huge hit. I think there's one out there actually. Selling the cover to the highest bidder (which CP did with Fulltilt) is asinine IMO. I think they have a responsibility to correctly represent their advertisers. One cardplayer staff wrote something about FT being the best site and would soon take over Pokerstars. lol, i mean come on. |

Re: Cardplayer: Psuedo-Journalism?
i find it hard to dump with a life size picture of doyle staring back at me - 30 or 40 full page pictures per issue? blatant ads disguised as articles? and every month needs a tournament photo of a Shulman no matter how well they played? max shapiro as a humor columnist? i hope his obituary is funnier

Re: Cardplayer: Psuedo-Journalism?
I remeber thinking then same thing when BoDog had their 'big' story about the new software etc as the main feature that month. It's is journalism in the strict sense of the word, but no major journalistic publication would ever print drivel like (that mentioned above)

Re: Cardplayer: Psuedo-Journalism?
The "sellout" to Fulltilt had to be at a big price. Hellmuth and, I think Negranue are part owners and affiliated with other sites.

Re: Cardplayer: Psuedo-Journalism?
yeah, I'm betting one of them won't be part of CP anymore very soon. Anyone want to wager on that?

Re: Cardplayer: Psuedo-Journalism?
What has always bothered me about both Cardplayer and Poker Player is poker room reviews devoid of ANY criticism whatsoever. Whenever there is a new poker room that opened, it is always written about as though it is the best around. No actual criticism is ever included, even when there should be. No room is perfect, and yet, according to CP and PP, all are. Every time there is an article about a poker room, it is like reading a long ad.

But in the wold of hardcopy magazines, they don't have any legitimate competion. But that may change in the future. MM |

MM [/ QUOTE ] Financially, this website isn't in the same league as the top 2 magazines, especially when you include radio. Now if you want to count the publishing, maybe, but still probably not. All this site caters to really is strategy. There's an entire other market for people who don't care about to correct odds to call a bet. they are losing more and more ground and they aren't going to be happy at next years WSOP. I can't go any further there. The only other magazine that had a presence at the WSOP this year was Bluff, and they had a pretty big presence. |
