2/4 middle pair against preflop raiser
No reads, assume UTG is TAG.
Am I beat here often enough after UTG's turn bet to lay this down? I figure that he's not making a continuation bet on the turn against 2 opponents so I fold. Is this weak? Wuold you have played the flop differently? Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (8 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver) Preflop: Hero is BB with 9, T. Re: 2/4 middle pair against preflop raiser
I would fold, you probably are only ahead of AK or 99.
You saw the flop and didn't get lucky (No draw, no two pair, no trips) Fold |

I'd have played it the same way.

Re: 2/4 middle pair against preflop raiser
Would this play turn into a call down if we were heads up? I figure we're ahead ok AK, AJs, and possibly ATs, and villain would probably make a continuation bet with all of these hands against one opponent who has checked the flop and turn.

Re: 2/4 middle pair against preflop raiser
Since raise comes from UTG we have to assume hand strength is higher. AA-77, AK-AJ, ATs, KQ. Even when you are ahead, villain has pretty good equity.
Part of the time, to vary your play you can try donking the flop or turn, but TAG could still raise with AK/AJ...so the way you played is fine as your default. |

Re: 2/4 middle pair against preflop raiser
I'd have donkbet the flop, called a raise and, if raised, check-fold the turn UI. If UTG smooth-called the flop I'd have a hard decision on the turn, but would likely fire again.

Re: 2/4 middle pair against preflop raiser
As played, I like your fold.
I generally bet the flop here. If TAG has a PFA over about 2.5, he's raising you with pretty much any 2 cards that he'd have opened with UTG and you'll likely get heads up. (if you don't, you're beat and can fold the turn UI). After the flop, against an aggressive player, I'd be calling down. You'll either be paying 2 more BBs to win 7 or 1 more BB to win 6, if he checks the river through. So worse case, you need to win 22% of the time to break even. You're ahead of more than 22% of a typical tag's range. Against a TAG with a PFR of less than 2, I'd be leaning towards folding the turn UI. Continued betting from a non-aggressive player allows you to narrow his hand range. I don't believe you're ahead of 22% of the hands that a non-aggressive player is betting here. |
