"Insomnia - Robin Williams" > Insomnia - Swedish original [/ QUOTE ] No. Surprised The Maltese Falcon hasn't been mentioned yet! Here's a couple controversial picks: The Magnificent Seven and A Fistfull of Dollars. The originals are classics but I have a soft spot for great westerns. |

It's been a long time since I watched these two movies, but the IMDB scores suggest that:
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) > The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) |

Hitchcock made both versions. The first when he was a not too well known british director and the second after he could do what he wanted to in Hollywood. To really be considered a remake I'd have to say that both movies have to be made by different people, not just higher budgeted versions made by the same people. |

I like El Dorado better than Rio Bravo, although I think most John Wayne fans disagree with me on this. I thought the performances from Robert Mitchum and James Caan were far better than the performances given by Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, and I think the shootouts were better choreographed in El Dorado as well.

Red Dragon > Manhunter
----- Red Dragon is certainly not better than Manhunter. You might think Hannibal Lecter was cooler, but Manhunter is much better than Red Dragon. Better directed and I think William Petersen is a better Graham than Edward Norton (although I am sure people will get mad, since I noticed everybody loves Ed Norton). Petersen was definitely better than Norton for that part. There's a reason why Norton was playing Graham as Petersen played him. And Brian Cox was a better Lecter for that script than Hopkins. |

Another possibility is "Man Who Knew Too Much". Although there is debate on which version is better. I haven't seen the original, but the remake was very good. [/ QUOTE ] I think that I prefer the pacing of the original over the remake. Both are damn good, but the remake is longer and the plot develops more slowly. The original develops quickly and builds the same suspense. |

[ QUOTE ] Ocean's 11 ftw. [/ QUOTE ] This is the first one I came up with that was reasonable. CMAR replied "No" to: [ QUOTE ] "Insomnia - Robin Williams" > Insomnia - Swedish original [/ QUOTE ] If the IMDB ratings are anythign to go by, the Norwegian original is 0.1 points better than the remake. I haven't seen it, and respect Nolan, but I would imagine that it is a close call in favour of the original. |

[/ QUOTE ] I too, have a great fondness for 'Westerns' and enjoyed both 'The Magnificent Seven' and 'A Fistfull of Dollars'. As good as they were, and with my fondness for westerns, I don't think they match Kurasawa's originals.... |
