Vegas Trip Report - Very Long, Poker, Pot, Cows & More!

My wife and I celebrated our 21 year wedding anniversary by making our 3rd trip to Vegas. It had been several years since our last Vegas trip, before we began playing poker in 2003. I'm a hardcore poker addict, the wife is finally half way decent but still very green. We flew in Thursday July 27 and left Tuesday Aug 1. It just so happened that the main event at the Rio was starting then, and I did play in some online satellites beforehand but never qualified. Our plan tho was to have as much fun as possible checking out the other nice poker rooms on the Strip.

After doing some research, we decided to book our stay at the Stardust since it had the cheapest poker room rate, $40 weekdays and $70 weekends. They were very lax about the playing hours needed to qualify for the reduced room rate, so for the entire stay we only played there maybe 6 hours (thank god). Our hotel bill came out to less than $300 total for 5 nights - worth it, even for a dump that will soon be torn down.

Before heading out I stumbled across this saying there was going to be a swinger's convention at the Stardust. Sweet! Of course being happily married I'm not gona get involved but the thought of a buncha hot women who like alot of sex hanging around the casino was pleasing indeed. But nooo... the swingers left right when we got there, only to be replaced by the BBW network convention instead. What a letdown. Oh my god those heffers were HUGE! My lovely wife of 21 years is overweight herself, but she looks like a size 6 compared to these elephants. Seriously, at lease a 3rd of them were so fat they had to use motorized scooters to get around. I'd put the avg weight at around 600 lbs, I'm not kidding. They would hang out in the lobby by the elevators, so every time I got off I'd see these GIANT women all clustered together, most smoking and drinking heavily, eating cheetos. It was sick. One night I saw a blimp hook up with a fat black guy as they headed up the elevator together for what had to have been at least 900 lbs combined of BB whoopie.

Back to us. So I've been smoking pot for 25 years, love to take it on vacations. For this trip however I had recently acquired some $500/oz "tsunami shoreline", the best most wicked kind herb I've ever scored in all my life. The smell was overpowering, one bowl just knocks your socks off for hours. I rolled up 1/2 oz real tight in multiple sandwich bags, along with a 1/4 oz of generic (just in case), and kept it in my underwear by my balls for the flight. I also bought a new wooden pipe to check in my luggage. Made it to Vegas no prob, but only got 1 hour of sleep the night before. Oh well no time for a nap, figure its time to start getting wasted.

My usual operandi is to go into the hotel room bathroom and fire up the shower and blow the pot smoke out the exhaust vent. Freekin Stardust doesn't have exhaust vents in the bathroom. Our non-smoking room is soon filled with the powerful aroma of skunk city. My wife, who does not imbide, is not pleased. Damn, I'm gona have to find other places to smoke. So I make trips downstairs (past the giant cows) to discretely smoke outside, or take a quick hit in the casino restroom and exhale after I walk around the slots. Man this smoke is outstanding! I'm gona have to get nonstopped ripped to finish it all in 5 days.

The rest of day 1 we walk over to the Wynn and enjoy their fine poker room. I like to play $1/2 or $5/5 NL or 15/30 limit, but my wife is only comfortable playing the lowest limit games, and since its our anniversary trip (and we do like playing in the same games together) I'm happy to play $4/8 limit with her. Typical low limit games, I get rivered several times right off the bat and am down $200, but slowly climb back to +$40 after 5 hours. While playing poker I take several breaks to do my patented "take a hit in the bathroom stall, quickly squelch the pipe, hold my breath walk fast and slowly exhale somewhere else" moves. When I'm done repeating I always wash my hands and chew some gum but this pot is so freekin strong I know I reek when I get back to the table. One old dealer even comments (I'm in seat 1) about how he hasn't smelled that odor in 10 years, but I'm having a great time playing stoned poker and drinking strawberry daqueries. My wife ends up down $180 oh well, but the $20 comps for the Wynn buffet are much appreciated, and the food is outstanding. After dinner we head back to the Stardust and I crash early like 9pm, totally zonked from recent lack of sleep, stuffed belly and stoned brain cells. My wife is not sleepy so she heads to the Stardust poker room.

Friday Day 2. Its our anniversary today, going to see O at the Bellagio tonight, I purchased front row seats weeks in advance. I wake up at 4am, my wife has not come to bed yet. I find her $200 down in the $3/6 game at the Stardust where she has played all night, but has had a great time with a bunch of rowdy fun people. I decide to join the festivites having just woken up, but one hour later the fun people have left, my wife is finally sleepy, and I'm down $100 in $3/freekin 6 limit, so things end and the wife goes to bed.

I'm wide awake of course so I go hiking down LV blvd at 5am, pipe in hand smoking a bowl. I love to Wake & Bake. The new pipe I brought tho sucks, but I manage to inhale enuf while walking past that ipod fashion crap across from the Wynn. I end up at the Mirage very stoned and decide to play some poker there. I sit down and buy in for $200 in the $1/2 NL game, filled with a buncha drunks who have been up all night. One key hand, I have 86 spades in the SB and limp in after several limpers. Flop comes all low spades, I got a flush. I bet $10 the pot get 1 caller. Turn is a brick I bet $30 pot he calls. Damn I'm thinking what's he drawing too? River comes a 4th spade. I check, guy bets $50. I'm thinking Crap, I just got rivered and an A or K of spades just got there. I'm also so stoned that I don't do the math that it's gona cost me $50 to win $140, but I fold.. I then hear drunk guy tell his neighbor "I didn't have a spade". Damn I folded the winner! I decide to leave soon after $100 down. Time to go smoke another bowl.

I decide to walk back to the Walgreens across from the Stardust and buy a corn cob pipe. Using the screens I brought it serves just fine, and has a big bowl, so I'm back in business, walking around the neighborhood around 9am getting totally re-stoned for the 2nd time of the day. I go back to the Wynn but the wait list is long, so I walk around there and smoke some more pot. I go back to the poker room and find out I've missed my call to a game. Damn.. at this point I'm really wasted so I head back to the McDonalds next to the Stardust and stand in a LONG line to get a late breakfast, take some back to the wife for when she wakes up, and I crash for a much needed nap. Wake up feeling refreshed that afternoon, smoke another bowl outside the Stardust (freeking 120 degrees). My wife and I take a cab to the Bellagio and pick up our O tickets, then we go across the street to the Barbary Coast for some excellent chinese food lunch (which we've enjoyed in past Vegas trips). We then kill some time at Bally's poker room while waiting for our late show. She's playing 2/4 limit, and lets me leave her there while I try another $1/2 NL game. The wife finally has a good run at the poker tables, but its only 2/4 so the $80 doesn't come close to covering her previous losses. Me, I somehow lose another $300. Twice I had a flush on the flop or turn, only to have a 4th flush card hit the river. Both times, remembering earlier when I folded the winner, I decide to call only to see the A high nut flush rivered me. So far the trip has not gone as planned poker wise. That night we see O.. excellent show! Nice way to celebrate 21 years.

Saturday Day 3. Trip report continued.

My wife sleeps in this day, but I walk over to the Venetian to check out their fine poker room. Man is it nice! I decide to relax with some 6/12 limit, have a nice run and win around $200.. finally a little on the positive side of these Vegas sessions. My wife wakes up that afternoon and takes a cab to join me at the V, also plays some 6/12 and only loses around $50. Throughout the day I like to step outside the V and hit my pipe hard. The outside of the V poker room is perfect for getting high. There are two big towers down at the bottom of the entrance, one with a statue I'm guessing of Caesar lording over a dead alligator (go figure), and the other of a griffin or chimera I believe it is, head of a lion, wings of an eagle. The chimera statue is great to hang around, hitting the pipe and blowing the smoke downwind when nobody is around. I took many a break there getting ripped, right out in the open. Perfect scenic location to smoke in public if discreet about it. That evening we get our Venetian comps and enjoy a nice meal at the Asian Noodle restaurant. That night I also see Roy Cooke playing in a 40/80 game. When he takes a break I go over to say "Hi, I really like your book and articles". Nice guy. I'm sure I smell of skunk week. Roy asks if I'd like to take the empty seat in their game.. maybe next time I say. Later that night I'm smoking pot/walking thru the casino and I see Gavin Smith alone at a blackjack table, buying in for like $3000. I double back to tell him "hey I really like you on The Circuit" and he seems genuinely appreciative. Maybe he busted out of the main event earlier that day and was trying to unwind, heck I duno. Around midnight I'm totally zonked and its time for me to head back to the Stardust for some ZZzzs.. my wife stays behind at the V and ends up playing $3/6 all night.

Sunday Day 4. I wake up 8am, my wife is not back yet, call her cell to find she's still at the V. I head down there soon, but decide to play $1/2 NL instead of joining her for $3/6 limit, since she's been up all night and really needs to go back and sleep soon, which she does. I have a nice run at NL, and win over $200 in 5 hours of play (with frequent smoke/get stoned breaks of course). That afternoon I call The Steakhouse inside the Circus Circus and make reservations for our dinner that night, which was excellent. After dinner its time for me to crash again cause I'm so tired.. but my wife is now on a completely different sleep schedule so she heads to the Wynn for all night $4/8 fun, and unfortunately has another losing session. She comes in aroun 4am and I wake up soon afterwards.

Monday Day 5. 5am and I'm up walking down the strip again, heading to the Mirage, smoking my pipe. I've really been hitting it hard this trip, in a constant state of marajuana haze which is great. I notice I've really put a dent into my stash, and might have to hit the generic weed before the trip is over (damn). Its my last full day in Vegas. I get to the Mirage and join a 3 player 10/20 limit game (my speciality is short handed limit). These 3 have been playing all night when I join, and I proceed to win over $200 in one hour. One hand I have 55 and the turn comes 765. Guy with KK finally folds on the turn when me and another guy keep reraising. Of course a K comes on the river and he'da won a huge pot if he had stayed (and drawn to a dirty 2 outer). He's pissed and leaves the game, which soon breaks up. I then sit in a 1/2 NL game. I have 87os in middle and I limp. Flop comes K54, turn is a 6 and I have the nuts, I make a bet, guy behind me with $150 goes all in, I call, he shows 23, and my higher straight busts him out. Later I get AA and bust the big fish, and the game soon breaks. 2 hours Monday morning at the Mirage and I've broken 2 games and won over $400. I decide to surprise my wife with tickets to the Beatles Love show that night at the Mirage in our final night in Vegas, so I kill one more hour at the morning $3/6 limit game waiting for the box office to open. Tickets in hand I decide to walk to the Venetian and smoke another bowl on the way over. 30 minutes after I join a $1/2 NL game I play stupid and call a big raise with only TPTK and lose my $200 stack. Damn, there went half my morning profits. I'm pissed at myself so I decide to walk from the Venetian, thru Caesars, and finally end up at the Bellagio. I figure no trip is complete without at least a little playing time a the famous Bellagio poker room... but it was a pretty sucky experience waiting for 1.5 hours for a new 8/16 game to start, then having a donk catch runner/runner straight to crack my set and I'm down like $200 before I know it. Damn, there went the last of my morning profits, and its only noon. Bellagio sucks. I take a cab back to the Stardust and take a nice afternoon nap.

Monday evening I'm feeling good, but my primo pot supply is running low, and I'm forced to smoke my generic for the first time, saving the last of the good stuff for right before the Beatles show. We take a cab to the Venetian and cash in our comps for the Grand cafe there, which was also outstanding, then we walked to the Mirage for the early Beatles show while I hit some of the last of my kind supply. My goodness that Beatles show was excellent! We love Beatles music, and to hear it on that soundsystem is to experience their art like never before. A truly moving performance that was over too soon, I HIGHLY recommend you go see this if you get the chance. Afterwards we hung around outside the Mirage to watch the volcano show (while I discretely smoked another bowl in the crowd). Then it was time to go back to the Venetian and see if we could get some late night poker fun in our last night. We both sit in the 6-12 limit game, and I quickly raise like a demon and take over the table and win like $200 in 30 minutes. Unfortunately I then decided to take another smoke break, and I left my wife alone in that game, and all the people I won from took out their frustrations on my wife and she ended up losing $200 by the time I finally got back from smoking. She was pissed (and tired from not getting much sleep that trip) so I decided to call it a night and walk back to the Stardust with her.

Tuesday Day 6. I woke up again at 5am (am an early riser) and I finish up the last of my kind bud as I walk to the Wynn. I sat in a 5/5 NL game but couldn't catch a hand and lost $100 before heading back to the Stardust to get ready to fly home. We catch a cab at noon for the airport, and I decide to throw away the last of my generic weed in a trashcan at the airport rather than risk flying home with it. Inside the airport I see one of those new screening machines that blows air on you and can see whatever you're hiding in your underwear. I don't have to walk thru it tho, and I was clean at that point.. but I wonder how long till all airports have them and I can't take my weed with me on vacation anymore... maybe this was the last trip to do that who knows. I ended up $240 in poker winnings, but my wife lost $600 so as a family we were down.. but my goodness we had a great time seeing O, the Beatles show, and playing poker in some nice rooms.

Can't wait to go back.

I think the best part is staying at the Stardust to save a few $$$ on room rates, then you take a cab all over the strip everyday spending all sorts of $$$

good report... I love the stardust too, I stayed there for 5 days abotu 5 months ago, back then the rate was $30 sun-thurs, did you get an upgraded room? if you wanna get blazed next time and be real safe about it, make some cookies! thats what I try to do when I roll to LV, even though I drive. its very easy, youll stay high for 4-5 hours, and you got nothin on you and no smell. just use pre-made dough, grind weed and blend it in the dough, ad a drop of canola or veg oil, and cook like a regular cookie... consume and enjoy when it hits you 1-2 hours later.

Newbie, we still saved a ton of $$ staying at the Stardust, and only took maybe 6 short cab rides all week. We mostly walked from the Stardust to the Wynn, Venetian and Mirage.

Ya I've made cookies before.. but it is very wasteful, and at $250 for my half oz of tsunami, I wanted to get every puff's $$'s worth. That and I enjoy the smoking part too while walking around. I'm very good at smoking in crowds and nobody can tell where the scent is coming from... and if other poker players can tell I'm high, screw em.

I find that I'm still an excellent limit player when stoned, but my NL decisions do suffer at times. Only takes 1 bad decisions in a NL session to really mess up your day. Still it was great getting totally baked in Vegas. Next time we're going when its cold outside tho.
