the first two i thought of when i saw the topic were gimme shelter and chaos ad (sepultura). stones probably because it's featured in the recent scorcese trailer, and sepultura because i think it ranks highly in the "songs that start great but taper off" category. somebody mentioned hey you, i think one of these days beats that for floyd songs. i want albert pujols to use it as his at-bat music.
there are billions of ways to interpret good leadoffs. i think most of them are going to end up being good songs. for my money, baba o'reilly is probably the best. |

Interpol - Untitled
it's very simple, but it hooked me not only on the song, but on the whole group |

Rage Against the Machine - Bombtrack Actually, one could make a case for most RATM songs. Tom Morello > all. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah definitely. Good choice. |

Some already mentioned, to which I will add: Money, Pink Floyd.
It's hard to beat Baba O'Reilly or Foreplay, though. |

I'm gonna go obscure - How about Devo, Gut Feeling? It was used in The Life Aquatic.
I was always a huge fan of Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls. Foreplay and Baba O'Riley are obvious selections too. Interesting note: Baba O'Riley's introduction sounds very reminiscient of minimalist composer/hippie Terry Riley of whom The Who were big fans - imagine something sounding similar to that for 30+ minutes with no guitar crashing in. It can make for some good background music for certain Internet-related gambling games. |

Just like Heaven was one of the first intro's I learned on the guitar, which convinced my parents that I was demonic. Therefore I love that intro.

I can't remember the name of the song but it is by the band Yes. It has a really long instrumental intro that is awesome and reminds me of Edgar Winters band... then that intro is followed by some horribly forgettable piece of classic rock trash.
Whatever song that is gets my vote. |
