References for renting a house

This is almost certainly a stupid question, but who are you supposed to list as a reference on application for renting a house/apartment?

Previous employers, landlords or people you've lived with are usually good.

Maybe try an old landlord? Or how about a family friend?

Yea, I did a friend, but wasn't sure if that's what they are looking for. It also asked for landlord contact info in another spot, as well as employer contact info.
