too hard to rank them because of my listening methods.

so, in alphabetical order:

AFI - Black Sails in the Sunset 1999
At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command 2004
Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly 2002
Baroness - Second (ep ) 2005
The Blood Brothers - Burn Piano Island, Burn! 2003
The Books - Lost and Safe 2005
Brother Ali - Shadows on the Sun 2003
Calexico/Iron&Wine - In the Reins 2005
The Clap, Hart, and the Toddfather - Dead Horses Don't Work
The Coup - Party Music 2004
Cursive - The Ugly Organ 2003
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies 2006
Dr. Dre - 2001 1999
Elliot Smith - From a Basement on a Hill 2004
Gorillaz - Last Living Souls 2005
Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. II 2003
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days 2004
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides 2002
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood 2006
Outkast - Aquemini 1998
Red Light Sting, The - Rub 'em Down Rub 'em Out/Our Love is Soaking in It [combined them since they're both EPs]
Tool - Aenima 1996
Tool - Lateralus 2001
Weezer - Pinkerton 1996

note: don't have any other albums from a few bands here like Neko Case and Destroyer, so in some cases the list may not reflect even the artist's best from 1996-2006

Crap I forgot Jets to brazil.

[/ QUOTE ]

I played the latest album by the Hold Steady for an extremely well versed friend of mine (as in music director of a college radio station for the last year well versed) who said it sounded just like Jets to Brazil.
And I [censored] love that album, so, if you can recommend me something I'd listen.

[/ QUOTE ]

Orange Ryhming Dictionary is their best album, but I don't think it sounds much like the Hold Steady. Its still a friggin awesome album though.

[/ QUOTE ]

the Hold Steady sounds nothing like JTB. Orange Rhyming Dictionary is actually their only album that i like, but it's in my top five.

other albums that would be on my list that i haven't seen mentioned:

Superchunk -- Indoor Living
Constantines -- Shine a light
Fugazi -- End Hits
Hot Snakes -- Suicide Invoice

Vintage indie rock for OOT

Ok guys. They're in no particular order but here is how they appear in the archive.

01 Iron Clad Lou (Hum - Elektra 2000) early space rock w/ some metalhead flair
02 Design and Debris (Sorry About Dresden - The Mayor Will Advocate) - mad love for my Chapel Hill kids
02 The Pod (Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut) - love the scream and the outro on this song, unusual to hear from singer Matt Talbott
02 The Same Stars (Karate - The Bed is in the Ocean) - Farina showing off his chops on the guitar here
03 Cut Your Face (June of 44 - Four Great Points) - these guys are kind of jazzy but this is a very edgy song - chorus is in 7/4!
04 Merchandise (Fugazi - Repeater) - you are not what you own
04 The Last Wars (Karate - The Bed is in the Ocean) i love the lyrics on this one
06 Good Morning Captain (Slint - Spiderland) closing track from what many people consider the best indie rock album EVAR. takes a while to get into this outside of the context of the album but the end of this song is sick
06 Sea Anemone (Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary) - melancholy grownup [censored] from Jawbreaker's Blake Schwartzenbach
07 Every Sister (Karate - Karate) - my favorite song from Claunchy's favorite Karate album
07 Sundress (Hum - Elektra 2000) - the prototypical fast-loud / soft-slow-pretty space rock song
10 Jinx Removing (Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy) [/b]this guy can say stuff that would be a joke coming out of anyone else's mouth... somehow it works
11 Sweet Avenue (Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary) if your girlfriend asks to learn guitar, teach her this song. trust me.
Shut the Door (Fugazi - Repeater) - proto screamo for the historically minded
220 Years (Hot Water Music - Fuel for the Hate Game) no band i regret missing live more.
Blackjaw (Hot Water Music - Fuel for the Hate Game)
Turnstile (Hot Water Music - Fuel for the Hate Game)
Accident Prone (Jawbreaker - Dear You) maybe Blake's best song, i dunno
Sluttering (May 4th) (Jawbreaker - Dear You) - 'this is the story you won't tell the kids we'll never have' - what a breakup song
Discipline (Leatherface - Cherry Knowle) England's finest post-punk outfit
Springtime (Leatherface - Mush) my favorite punk album of all time... HWM covered this on "Live at the Hardback"
Bowl of Flies (Leatherface - Mush) never ever in a million years will we understand our minds
Hide Me From Next February (Les Savy Fav)

Sorry, no Promise Ring on this computer.

NT, i don't think Repeater fits the time frame. sorry to hear you never got to see HWM live, i saw them once at a coffee shop with about 15 other people. i agree with you on Mush--great, great album.
