EZ Pass didn\'t work - unpaid toll - Am I screwed?
Basically, my wife and I borrowed a friends EZ Pass for our trip to PA from CT this weekend. On the way back, over the GWB, the pass wouldn't read and as I rolled through the toll, I saw the words “UNPAID TOLL” on the screen.
I thought I could just call someone and explain that it didn't read, and I could pay the toll by check if I had to. Then my wife talked to her friend and found out that you could get a fine if you use an EZ Pass that is not registered to your car, and it can get taken away from the owner. WTF is my play here? Screwed? |

No biggie, happened to me more than once they just send a bill for the toll. Once there was a $25 fine but they reversed it after a phone call.

dunno where you live, but in Chicagoland - I've gone a year or two before I got I-Pass. When there was no gate, I'd typically throw in a couple pennies and drive off. I've gone through the I-Pass lane a couple times as well without paying.
It's been years since I did this stuff, and I've never gotten a ticket. |

You also usually get a couple of warnings before they start fining you.

Re: EZ Pass didn\'t work - unpaid toll - Am I screwed?
I am hoping to just get a bill for the toll, but my real concern is that it will somehow be discovered that the EZ Pass I was trying to use, was not even mine. I don't want that headache.

Re: EZ Pass didn\'t work - unpaid toll - Am I screwed?
When I borrowed a friend's ez-pass and the toll was unpaid, I received a invoice for the amount of the toll plus a $25 admin fee. I made a phone call and signed up for my own ez-pass. The woman waived the $25 fee but I am not sure how common that is if you just call and say you want the fee waived.
Try signing up for ex-pass. It is free and very simple. Plus waiting in toll lines to pay the state money for the right to drive on their road really sucks in my opinion. |
