Default hhf and hand history

just curious: what is the difference between the hhf files and the hand history files (party client). Are they not the same? Would one of them not be enough?
I undestand that the hand history files are permanent and stored in directories for each day.
But what are the hhf files for?

The party files are only created for hands that you take part in. People doing serious datamining don't actually play on the table they are watching, thus the need for a third party program.
