Help me buy a new computer
I need an upgrade badly, I need more power. At one time I usually run eight tables, PT, PA, PRFetch (which is mining up to 15 tables), firefox, music match, and sometimes photoshop. Right now I have an AMD x86 1797 MHz proccesor, 1 GB or RAM, and a slow (don't know how fast) 75 GB HD. I crash way too much and it seems to be coming from PT.
With that said what kind of specs do I need to eliminate drag and PT crashes? Also, where is a good place to get what I need? I would kind of like to build my own though I am a total noob when it comes to that. How hard would it be build my own with my lack of experience? I am a very fast learner and I have never come across a problem I couldn't solve. I am pretty savvy when it come to using a computer and diagnosing and fixing software problems. Where's the best place to buy components? I hope this isn't to incoherent. I'm coming off 12 hour session while having to deal with my slow ass machine. Thoughts? |

Re: Help me buy a new computer
buy quality components and you won't have a problem building it.
i would recommend an amd opteron 165 or 170, 150-160GB Western Digital Raptor HDD (plus an additional larger harddrive for backups/archives), 1-2GB quality ram ($100/GB minimum) and an asus motherboard newegg.com is best in the biz for computer components |

Re: Help me buy a new computer
I've been on newegg all night and I have a few ideas. Instead of getting a whole new system I'm thinking about just upgrading. This is what I'm looking at now:
AMD Athlon 64 Windsor 2 GHz HT 2 x 512 L2 Dual Core Processor Gigabyte GA-M55sLI-s4 MOBO Powercolor X800 GTO 16 256 MBDDR3 PCI Express (Dual DVI) That's what I've got my eye on now. I do have 1 gig of SDRAM. I think I will also get a fast HD as a second HD. I'll keep my slow 75 gig to save me the trouble of transfering all my data. I'll put PT on the new HD. Criticisms of my plan as it stands? Suggestions? How much more performance can I expect after an upgrade like this? Thanks |

Re: Help me buy a new computer
Well that looks good but with a new motherboard, processor, video card, and hard drive, I'd say your getting a new system not upgrading one.

Re: Help me buy a new computer
building your own computer is fairly easy, BUT problems come up pretty often. it could be a tiny little jumper you didn't put in the right place that causes your computer not to boot up. it can be very difficult to find what went wrong, especially if you don't have spare computer parts lying around.
