Here's the website for World's Fastest Drummer competitions:
http://www.extremesportdrumming.com/wfdtv.htm

Plenty of videos. Not real drumming as the guys are going for pure speed. But still interesting.

Flo Mounier is the fastest drummer of all time and arguable one of the best. He plays the fastest blast beat ever recorded on Cryptopsy's latest album. Video here.

Rock : Keith Moon? or is this thread only for super drum nerds and he doesn't hold up?

[/ QUOTE ]

Doesn't hold up. Not exactly a stickler for proper technique. Not particularly innovative.

[/ QUOTE ]
Moons drumming is freaking awesome. Nobody else ever came close to sounding like him. Totally unique, and absolutely made songs like I Can See for Miles, I Can't Explain, Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere. Who gives a crap about technique when your drummer basically destroys his kit just by playing it?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because someone like Neil Peart can do those Moon songs without destroying his kit and with good technique. Moon's a good drummer. But he's not the best ever.

[/ QUOTE ]
Never came close to saying he was. I really like him and he was batshit crazy in an endearing way.

Chad Sexton of 311 is the only drummer that ever made me take notice of the drums in a song. I'm not a big fan of drumming but this guy is amazing. JMO

Since Neil Peart and Carter Beauford have already been mentioned, I'll throw a shout out to Mike Portnoy

Travis Barker is a stretch. He's good, but punk drumming is different.

fwiw, i named my ferret after Buddy Rich. Portnoy, Peart, and Beauford all never fail to entertain.

All of those talents are better expressed in context with the music they wrote with, moreso than solos.

I wouldn't put krupa or rich in the top 10 for jazz.

[/ QUOTE ]

in general I would never put a big band drummer in the top ten for jazz. The nature of a Big Band vs a Small Combo group helps hide a weaker drummer in a big band where he'd get exposed big time in a combo

[/ QUOTE ]

So Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich were "weak"?

[/ QUOTE ]

rich, no, krupa, kinda sorta. Krupa was someone who could only really play in a big band style and had problems the few times he tried to play bop. His was a style that was geared only towards his band and essentially playing loud. Krupa charts were never really all that demanding either, I highly doubt that he could play well in Kenton's band which was a lot more sophistocated then anything the krupa bands did. Any of the guys who generally also played in teh short lived Eckstein band were much better as that was a very inovative band. I wouldn't even come close to rating Krupa anywhere near Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, or Tony Williams

To everyone that has mentioned Messhuggah, I was at a concert where Meshuggah opened for Tool. Tool destroyed Meshuggah in every way, shape, and form, including drumming. Hearing Meshuggah live was one of my biggest musical let-downs. Tool on the other hand had their [censored] together. I don't know if their drummer is on par for best ever, but he is certainly better than Meshuggah. Especially considering that Tool's music is not easy. They delve quite extensilvely into odd time signatures and the drums hold everything together, all the while sounding rather virtuosic.

thats my two cents.

He probably blows away any drummer on the face of the Earth.

[/ QUOTE ]
