Also, raise more pre-flop. Say, $10 or $12.

I'm jsut a newb here, but I would have pushed the flop because you should have at the minimum made a pot-sized bet. As it stands, you offered him almost 3 to 1 to call with probable over-cards. If you potted the flop you would have been pot committed with only 7 more to bet the turn. Poosh dat flop.
