By the way (forgive me if I happened to miss this in the thread), while the Bodog.com Marketing Conference was cancelled, the big-ass party they are throwing at Tao at the Venetian is still very much on.
I'm picturing a bunch of feds hiding behind the naked dancing girls, waiting to cuff anyone who walks into their big sting operation. |

Guys the big difference is I'm sure Raymer, Hellmuth et al claim all their earnings for promoting the poker sites, thus prosecuters have less of a case. It's one thing to be an owner of a company that runs an illegal business, and another to be a US resident who is just a face/advisor of a site who reports that income on their taxes.

[ QUOTE ] Bodog has a sportsbook as well, which seems to be a major issue in the articles I've read. Also, none of those indicted were 'poker room managers' or 'paid to endorse', so . . . Mr. Ayre is probably in a different boat than the people you've discussed. No? [/ QUOTE ] I haven't seen anything to indicate that the government is distinguishing between online poker sites and online sports books, which are both illegal in the United States. If you have seen something which indicates that such a distinction is being made, then please post a link to it. [/ QUOTE ] I don't have a link to it - 'cuz I'm too lazy - but the distinction is between bets placed by telephone and everything else. I think only bets placed by telephone inside the U.S. are subject to the Wire Act. For now, it seems that as long as you are not playing poker on your telephone (or placing sports wagers by phone), you should be good. I'm not familiar with this new pending legislation, but it has nothing to do with the recent arrests because it is not yet law. |

[ QUOTE ] Why do so many have to play devil's advocate/rude to lawman.. I mean, are his points that invalid. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, they are that invalid. The arrests were NOT for running online poker sites or the advertising there of. [/ QUOTE ] True. The detainments pending arrests are based on fraud. They created 'watchdog websites' and are accused of running them to show phony numbers that told unsuspecting readers that their sites were the best to gamble at. We have no idea want the FBI and DOJ have up their sleaves and we don't know what other so called crimes the Justice Department, the DOJ, and the IRS have grounds to do. These guys are advertising that they are playing on the .net sites. Sure, for TV they are wearing .net gear. But the DOJ could have monitored the seat giveaways on the .coms, and witnesed these players. All I hope it all goes smooth and this WSOP as far as online partcipation is forgiven by authorities until a definition of what they can an cannot do is established. It is important to note that the indictments are NOT just for fraud. There are also tax evasion charges for failure to pay taxes on bets placed by Americans.
I strongly suspect that PokerStars, Full Tilt, Bodog, etc. have not been paying taxes to the United States government. Since I'm no tax expert, I don't know if they are supposed to be doing that or not, but that could be another way for the Feds to go after them. |

These people were not arrested for taking bets over the phone. They were arrested for taking bets over the internet, which is what online poker sites do, too. |

People discussing cheese should stfu. The original post warrants discussion. [/ QUOTE ] The original post was based on a flat-out stupid premise, the answer to which is obvious to anyone doing the high-level thinking promoted on 2+2. Cheese, however, is delicious and a good idea at any party. Ergo, cheese is more worthy of discussion. |
