why can\'t i get max resolution?

i have the dell 2001fp monitor and recently bought the ATI vision tek Radeon x1300. both should allow up to 1600*1200 and i have all drivers updated. Can anyone tell me why when i try and set the monitor to that resolution the screen blacks out and just eventually reverts back to lower res?
