Am I asking for trouble?
My girlfriend and I are heading to foxwoods for a night soon. I love playing poker there but my GF has never played in a B&M before. As oppose to sneaking off and playing for a few hours by myself I was thinking that it would be fun to play togther at a 2/4 table. Has anyone done this and had a positive experience? any helpful tips to avoid any situations?

Re: Am I asking for trouble?
It should be a lot of fun. I occasionally play 3-6 with my girlfriend for the purposes of just messing around. (Well, she tries to outplay me.) As long as it's clear to everyone that you're not trying to hustle the table, it should be fine.

Re: Am I asking for trouble?
If she knows how to play, then yeah, that should be great. I met up with a buddy of mine in AC before the shutdown and we played at the same table for a whole night -- it was a blast.
I just wish my wife played. She went to a cardroom in FL with me once and was allowed to sweat me, just sitting right behind me. That was ok -- a little weird, I guess. |

Re: Am I asking for trouble?
If she knows how to play ok she'll be fine. I took my wife to play some 3/6 and it did not go well, she played a very weak tight game (although she tried a really weird bluff on the river.) Lost her $80 and had a really bad time. I think that experience scarred her for life.

[/ QUOTE ] This is why I go and play alone. If you bust, you don't have to wait like a fool. The only person I would consider going with to a B&M would be my brother. Since he is a fellow card player and it just seems like less of a social burden if it was a friend. |

As oppose to sneaking off and playing for a few hours by myself I was thinking that it would be fun to play togther at a 2/4 table. Has anyone done this and had a positive experience? [/ QUOTE ] Yes. Mrs. Lossage and I head out together to play some donktacular $3/$6 or $5/$10 or whatever about once every month or two. So, for every two or three times I go to the casino, she's actually there with me for one. Most of those times, we'll play at the same table for at least a bit. [ QUOTE ] any helpful tips to avoid any situations? [/ QUOTE ] I have tips, but I don't claim they're helpful. <ul type="square">[*] People sometimes are justifiably nervous if a pair of significant others, siblings, etc. sit down at the same table. So, above all, don't soft-play against one another. If anyone says anything, assure him that you do not soft-play against one another. If she's the type to take it personally when you raise her blind (and almost everyone is when he's just starting out), explain this stuff to your girlfriend beforehand. I've actually had tables cheering for me and Mrs. Lossage to get in a pot together after the first time she check-raises my dumb ass. [*] Maybe try to give your girlfriend a few pointers beforehand, but don't make her nervous by drowning her in information. I usually tell first-timers to play any two Broadway cards or any pair pre-flop (but tighten way up with a raise in front), and to continue on the flop if they've made at least top pair or with four to a flush or with an open-ended (or double-gutted) straight draw [1]. We're poker nerds and enjoy learning lots of strategy, but normal people don't. She's going to have fun; don't make it sound like she's going to take the SATs. [*] Don't analyze hands afterward unless she brings them up. Again, we're poker nerds and like discussing these types of things, but most people don't. [*] Find a fun table. If you're sitting at a table full of cranky nits, get the brush to send you to a more fun one, or you're going to end up at the slot machines after your girlfriend gets fed up after an hour of their complaining.[/list]Hope this helps. [1] The attentive reader will note that this means people I advise will be limping with KT offsuit under the gun. Big deal; it's $3/$6. |

Re: Am I asking for trouble?
Also, you are lucky. My girlfriend hates poker, she would never consider going with me ever.
