Apt hunting in NY- short trip report
So I came to NY this week to try to find an apt. I'm a 25yo female research scientist (grad student) so I'm looking at relatively cheap apartments (1100 etc) but nothing super sketchy. The first apt I saw was a 7 month sublet for a woman with two cats. I walk into the apt and it's pretty cute but kind of musty. The woman is really nice but a little crazy cat woman type. Within 5 minutes her cat [censored] on the floor twice and pees once in his own food dish. It was sick. She proceeded to tell me "he's never done that!" "it must be because you're a stranger" Clearly I hightailed out of that one immed.
The next place I looked was in the east village and was a basement apartment literally about 5 times the size of an average restroom stall (not the wheelchair accessible one unfortunately) The guy who rented it was totally cool and I was seriously considering it until he mentioned he would be living there for 3 months with whoever signed the lease as he hadn't found a new place to live until october. He also asked if I was like the girl on grays anatomy who was a stripper during med school. Lovely. I learned pretty quickly that obviously anything too good to be true is. There was an in law suite in tribeca for 1400. A fair bit out of my price range but looked amazing. Well it was amazing. And the couple that lived in the main part of the house? Also really cool. They said they were looking for a female 25-35. Of course they didn't mention that they were looking for that because they want her to have their baby and live in the apt all preggers. Actually if I was more desperate it was a pretty sweet offer. 50k plus free rent for the duration of the pregnancy plus 3 months afterward. The 1400 was apparently so they could get "the right market" and not get any weirdos. Lol. I did eventually find a place today but only after looking at 73 apartments in 3 days. |

Re: Apt hunting in NY- short trip report
It's 1100 (including utilities!) and a 1br in the east village. No roomates. I got a great deal and just got really lucky. Hmmm in terms of size I would say it's about the size of the average studio in any other city but NY split in two rooms. It's cozy but in a great neigborhood. It's a 2nd floor walk up. I'll post pics tonight if I can.
Oh and yes (sigh) I really looked at 73. That includes open houses though not just scheduled appointments and 9 of them were with a broker I was considering using so that part was really efficient (took like 1 hr) |
