Default Request for an essay on Hip-Hop

As we gets older we start to sound just like our parents. (Despite all efforts to resist.)

We used to hear them say about rock ‘n’ roll that it all sounds the same and you can’t understand what the person is singing.

So in that vein I ask the following:

I loathe hip-hop, rap, the entire genre of music. Yet, I realize that there must be more to it than meets the eye (ear).

Is any one up to writing an essay (perhaps an apologia) on hip/hop? I am looking for something that will enlighten folk like me. I don’t expect it to make me start to like the music. I am only looking to appreciate it for what it is.

1)Nice try.
2)This is the Lounge, not OOT.
3)I already stated:

You would be wrong in this assumption.

It's popular music. There doesn't have to me more to it then meets the eye. You ever hear of the story of "The Emporer's New Clothes?" Just because people like something and other people treat it like it's some artistic masterpiece, doesn't mean that it is.

Com'on already it's popular music. Nothing more.

Funny people never ask this question about Brintey Spears or The Backstreet Boys' music, but there is little difference in talent involved in producing it.

That is like saying there is nothing more to John Lennon, Bob Dylan over Britney Spears, or that there is no difference between the artistic quality (or lack of - depending on one’s point of view) of Pink Floyd and the Archies. It is all Rock ‘n’ Roll or it is just Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Or that the progression from ‘50s R & R to 60’s to 70’s is moot. That nothing has changed - the music, the context of music in society, the effect music had on society or the other way around.

People could write volumes about R&R from the 50’s to the 70’s or even 80’s and 90’s. There is some profundity in today’s music. I just don’t know what it is or how to tell what is and isn’t good stuff.
