Default Strange Internet Explorer Problem

About two weeks ago, my desktop computer stopped allowing me to go to most websites. I can access some larger sites, like msn.com, denverpost.com, and cnn.com, but when I try to access something like twoplustwo.com, or my bank website, I immediately get a notice that "Internet Explorer Could Not Open the Search Page".

My desktop is older, and still runs Windows 98. I would replace it if i used it much, but I really just use it for web browsing, and nothing else. Now it won't even work for that.

I have tried to adjust both the security settings and Internet Preferences, but no luck. This seems like some sort of firewall / security issue, but other computers on the network are just fine. I have searched the boards, and some spyware sites are recommended, but I can't access the sites. Same problem.

Any ideas?

It sounds like a spyware/virus issue. It you really only use for web browswing I would consider install DSL Linux or Feather linux. It might be easier than trouble shooting your current problem

Have you tried another (better) browser, to see how that does?

Also, try using the internet besides just http. Fer instance, can you ping those servers you can't web to? What about even DNS lookups?
