Re: Waiting until it\'s your turn to look at your hole cards?
As an experiment, I've watched people closely look at their cards. I can't remember a single time I've seen them react. But I have seen them react to the flop. (If they immediately look down at their chips, they've got a hand.)

[/ QUOTE ] Ive read this in about 400 books, so its a standard tell, same as someone shuffling there cards after they look means they wish they were better. I don't look until Its my turn and I dont slow it down at all, I think its the new players who on TV see guys like Chris Ferguson take a set time every time its on him, and they think thats what they shoud do, they dont realize how little anyone can catch there tells and dont need to protect this until they are playing much much bigger limits or much deeper into tourneys. Its another thing TV has caused a problem with. I can look at 1 card, shuffle, look at the other, and have my decision processed immediatley unfortunatley some people are not the finely tuned poker athletes most of us are. [ QUOTE ]
If I'm in the big blind I usually look as soon as there's at least 1 limper. No real reason why, just habit. [/ QUOTE ] I do this too, but because of the don't look/chop issue. Same when I am in the small blind. -Tom |

Re: Waiting until it\'s your turn to look at your hole cards?
It depends on my position at the table. If I am early/mid action I will look right away. I hate when the table is slowed down. (side rant: I hate when people don't even know when its their turn to go and just sit there looking like a moron).
Later position, I will wait to look. Blinds: I always wait and watch what is going on. |

All the MTT advice for newbies says to do this, mainly because some people can't help but become visibly excited when they have a worthwhile hand.

[/ QUOTE ] So tell me, would you rather be visibly excited when you FIRST get your cards while most everybody else is looking at their cards rather than at you? Or wait until it's your turn when 9 pairs of eyes are glued to you? |

Re: Waiting until it\'s your turn to look at your hole cards?
[ QUOTE ]
I'll revive this thread just to bitch... Yesterday's Wynn tournament was filled with WSOP $1K NLHE bustouts. And I was lucky enough to land at a table where 7 of the 10 players waited until it was their turn to look, and many were rarely prepared to look. A couple folks were particularly bad about it, and one special case would always just cover his cards with a chip when he got them and he'd lean back until it was his turn, then look around the table when the action was on him, sometimes ask "who's still in" or "who raised" or "has it been raised" while still not moving (like what's he been doing while not looking at his cards if not following the action). Then he'd lean forward and S L O W L Y (oh so very SLOWLY) squeeze out his two cards. Then pausepausepause, and in S L O W motion he'd muck--he'd slowly pick up his cards, and slowly move 'em forward a bit, and then pause before FINALLY giving 'em a little flip. I timed it... we got 5 hands out in 15 minutes during the 2nd or 3rd round. Thank goodness that table broke and I only had to suffer with it this bad for about 45 minutes. Whomever popularized this common advice for the masses to not look until it's your turn needs to be keelhauled. [/ QUOTE ] Misguided Jesus Freak??? "Jesus F___in' Ferguson, would you play, already??!!!" |

I would have called for a clock every single hand as soon as the action was on him. [/ QUOTE ] Me too. I can be that guy if I am in a timed tournament and some yutz is taking way too much time preflop. Somewhere in between lightspeed and WSOP there is a reasonable time delay to act. It's like pornography, you can't define it, but you know it when you see it. |
