How the [censored] are Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden even getting brought up in this thread? Are you guys kidding?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah seriously. Maybe some of you guys are too young to remember when those bands were literally THE BIGGEST BANDS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.

Pixies never hit the mainstream but they are so over-referenced and salivated over by every passing generation of indie kid that you could never call them underrated either.

Tesla and Triumph come to mind from the '80's.

They are not really under the shadow of the bands you listed but Ride is a pretty awesome band from that time period that are very underrated IMO.

Good choice. Up until recently, I'd put just about any 88-93 Britpop band in the underrated category because the good stuff (Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Lush, etc) almost never crossed over to the US -- instead we got Oasis, yech. Fortunately that's all changed thanks to Franz Ferdinand, Killers, Futureheads, etc.

Anyway, along these lines, here are some bands that were a bit popular but mostly hated/snubbed by critics and since ignored by all:

UK:
EMF
Jesus Jones
Elastica
Sleeper
Julian Cope
Aztec Camera
Lightning Seeds
The Farm

US:
Urban Dance Squad
Screaming Trees
Lotion
Meat Puppets
Gastr del Sol
Dead Milkmen
L7
Slant 6
Bikini Kill (maybe...underrated only by antipolitical punk rock snobs)
Jawbox
Luscious Jackson

Mudhoney

An awesome band that never really gets mentioned around here, and maybe my favorite Seattle band of this era.

I'd actually list Mudhoney as a very Overrated band...they're OK but the amount of slobbering that went on at the time was totally undeserved, based on their records...
