It is definitely possible to turn off autoupdate...
You do not need seperate accounts. Don't have itunes on my laptop so I can't tell you how,but if you play around with it for a few minutes should be able to figure it out. www.ipodlounge.com is a good resource for this stuff |

I'm pretty sure that you can set iTunes not to automatically update content. Check out a program called Anapod Explorer as an alternative.
