I've been asked to run a poker table at a buddies Jack & Jill. If you don't know what a Jack & Jill is, it is just a party for a couple that plan to get married. Usually there are various games and raffles meant to make money for the couple.
I use them as an excuse to get drunk. Anyway, do any of you have experience with running a game where the purpose is to make money for the house? Ie., how should I setup the rake, and collect it? I've never even played in a casino to see how they take the rake from a pot. I was also thinking it might to be easier to have a "Let it Ride" table rather than a holdem game. thoughts? suggestions? |

Just run a tourney with the buy-in going to the couple. Maybe you could find some kind of (non-cash) prize for your first/second place finishers.

But, usually at these type things it's better if people can come and go as they please. It's more of a social event and most won't be poker players who will not want to sit and play for a few hours. |

Have a turbo tournament. 5-10min blinds. It will go really fast, and you could play more than one if you like.
In the end, I think you should just choose a game you are comfortable with. You suggested "Let it Ride", so maybe you should just stick to that game. |

Nobody doesn't like blackjack.
My first thought was that the high variance in blackjack might be a problem if the players keep winning, but given that many will probably be a bit drunk, and probably don't know basic strategy, it's a possibility if you can run it for a good 6 hours or more. I dunno, it's late/early, I might not be thinking clearly. I just thought I'd throw it out there. Edit: if you're worried about being unlucky and having to foot the bill, just add a $.25 rake to every hand. The players won't care too much about it (assuming they're placing $5 or $10 bets), and it'll pretty much guarantee that you'll have something to give to the married couple. |

On Blackjack the house wins on a push. Just tell them push goes to the groom/bride.

You are also going to want to take more than 1$ per pot. The games at these places are usually much slower than at a casino( especially without a skilled dealer). So you will at most make 25-30$ per hour and the game will last a few hours.

Play a casino night, everyone pays some money (predetermined set amount, say 100 bucks) to the 'house' and gets X amount in chips/fake notes.
Then they can play this fake money in a series of casino games you have set up (roullette, BJ etc) and maybe even a 'fake cash' cash game. The top 3 in fake money at the end of the night (or last 3 to bust) get some kind of prize. Your prize out goings are fixed, assuming you have a guestlist and assuming you know all will play your incomings are fixed AND you get to offer a full casino night on the cheap. Only difference is the person who breaks the bank merely gets a stuffed toy, or a breadmaker or summit. Or a cut of the buy ins, use your imagination. Edit: If you want to go whole hog get some of your own fake notes printed for the night - ie bank of Jack&Jill or whatever the bride and groom are called. This wouldnt make the worst souvenir of the night... |

When the pot gets to a certain size he takes out the appropriate amount of chips and puts them next to the drop slot. At the end of the hand he puts the rake into the slot. You could rent a poker table with a drop from a casino supply place, but that might be a hassle. If you are planning on playing without chips you might want to put a fishbowl or big brandy snifter next to you for the cash rake for Jack & Jill. Some casino players will tip a dealer an extra chip or two after winning a big pot. You could encourage the winner to toss in a few more bucks on a big pot. |
