Is bluffing to not give free showdowns to missed draws okay to do?
When it looks like our opponent is on a draw, and it misses on the river, is it worth it to stick out a small bet on the end to make them fold their missed draws when we have no showdown value? I do it occassionally and I think it's been positive for me, so far, but I was hoping to get some others' thoughts on it, as I don't recall this type of play discussed before.
Look at this hand, for example. Villain is loose and passive, and will definitely chase draws. It may not be the best example, but hopefully you get the idea. Absolute Poker No Limit Holdem Ring game Blinds: $0.50/$1 6 players Converter Stack sizes: UTG: $158.55 UTG+1: $50.85 Hero: $98.50 Button: $48.35 SB: $19.65 BB: $234.82 Pre-flop: (6 players) Hero is CO with 6[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] UTG folds, UTG+1 raises to $2, Hero calls, Button raises to $8, SB folds, BB calls, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls. Flop: J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] ($26.5, 3 players) BB checks, Hero checks, Button checks. Turn: 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] ($26.5, 3 players) BB checks, Hero bets $15, Button folds, BB calls. River: 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] ($56.5, 2 players) BB checks, Hero bets $20, BB folds. They only need to be on the missed draw, and fold, a little more than 2 out of 7 times for this to be worthwhile. So, I'm wondering about some things: -Is it worthwhile to do this in SSNL? -Can the bet be even smaller? -Is it worthwhile to do considering that, if we do get called, we look rather silly? Thanks for your thoughts. |

Re: Is bluffing to not give free showdowns to missed draws okay to do?
I don't remember exactly but you can probably find the post via the FAQ, it's called something along the lines of "My $25NL Return/Pilgrimage" and it was posted by fimbulwinter, an excellent poster we all miss.
He makes this specific point in his post, that he saw lots of situations where it was evident that at the river there were two missed draws in the hand, and one failed to get value by just making a modest river bet. I use about 1/3-1/2 pot, depending. That way it's hard to distinguish from my river value bets and blocking bets, and it's enough that a busted draw will certainly fold. And, it doesn't have to work very often (translation: your read on villain as having a busted draw doesn't always have to be correct) for it to be profitable. |

1)against the right opponents that chase and release after not improving: yes 2)depends on villian 3)yes, if you want to get payed off on your big hands Note: not sure if this is a great example with the made flush possibility on the flop |
