my theory - people raised in the suburbs develop less noticeable accents than people raised in the sticks or in the central city.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is why Jersey girls have such pleasant accents.

Ditto Worcester.

Jersey girls from the suburbs have MUCH less noticable accents than girls from Hudson County or Newark.

[/ QUOTE ]

My girlfriend grew up in suburban Jersey. While her accent has definitely been suppressed living in the Midwest for 3 years, her family (mom, dad, two sisters) definitely have very thick Jersey accents.

I think people in CT have no real accent as we tend to pronounce every thing like reading it from a dictionary. This is really odd though because every state that borders us has it's own distinct, thick accent (RI, MA, NY). I kind of feel we got robbed on the whole accent thing.

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe this is why whenever someone can't name every state in New England, CT is usually the one they're missing. But I agree with you. CT isn't as noticeable, especially as you get more westward.

Western MA and even VT (or the few parts I've been)fall into that category as well. Whereas Southeastern MA (where I'm from), Greater Boston, and RI all have very, very distinct accents. Somehow I avoided it, though. People are usually surprised when I say I'm from Mass.

I'm from Cincinnati, we have no accents. The only other place I've heard of that doesn't have accents is the West Coast...

I'm from Boston. We don't have accents. Everyone else does though.
