I think the cost varies very widely based on where you live and what kind of club it is. You should probably tell people where you live.

It's generally ridiculously expensive.

OTOH in some areas it's the only way to get access to nice tennis courts and golf courses.

Are tehre different types of clubs? My uncle is a member at one of the more exlusive ones in town, but its way to expensive for me (25k initation fee), and there are still no black members, so I wont be going there. He said he didnt know much about any other ones.

Watch out for hidden fees. Many clubs arounds the country have deals on initiation right now, but there are usually a number of fees in addition to your monthly fee. If you golf there could be fees for bag storage, driving range use, lockerroom, etc. If you are interested in a club today you can usually get them to give you the tour which may include a comp round of golf. Then make sure you get all the details.

*This of course does not apply to top end clubs.

If you're looking for a country club with black people, you may be looking a while. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not advocating rich old white guys baring African Americans from there country club. However, I don't think there that many African Americans, at least in my experience, who are trying to join most predominately caucasian clubs.

me ex was a member of the most exclusive country club near Boston. her parents were members, and there is normally a huge waiting list and process to join, but she got in when she was 26ish.

it is not nearly the most expensive around. a club in Nantucket charges upwards of $1M for memberships, from what I hear. nice 'nice' clubs in 'nice' areas (read: maybe 7 or 8 out of 10 on both rankings) charge around $250k I think.

the oldest/snobbiest clubs have endowments and trusts and such, and new members only pay a 'nominal' fee of $20K or so, plus another $5k or so in annual dues. I'm talking just about Boston.

Ya, I realize that, but this particular club didnt allow minorities until like 10 years ago, not by law obv, but there is a stigma attatched ecspecially to this one.

You'd probably be best looking for a decent semi-private club in your area. Due's are usually less exspensive and some of them are always running a 'special' where the initiation fee is waived. If you go to a private club you're going to have initiation, your yearly due's plus you have to spend a certain amount of money per month in the restaurant there. Also if the club wants to expand (i.e. new driving range/club house etc.) they can assess all the memebers X amount per month to cover it.

Guids,

I suggest taking your clubs over to East St. Louis and whacking balls around a vacant lot or something. Plenty of black people will turn out to see what the [censored] you're doing.
