Unreliable wireless

I have a linksys wireless G 2.4 connected off a router Comcast provided. I have two computers running off and on this wirelessly with Windows XP.

It is driving me crazy! The network often disconnects when it is within range, sometimes it says its a signal strength issue, but most often the network is listed in the available networks but won't connect. I disable and repair, reboot every component, but this problem persists until it mysteriously returns to operation. Sometimes this happens quickly, sometimes it takes several hours.

Anyone have any suggestions? Would better equipment help? Is there a software solution? I am at my wits end.
