Strategy question - Wait till the turn to raise

By raising you fail to protect your hand properly since everyone else can call their (weak) draws profitably for one bet, assuming that the pot is large. You wait until the turn to bet/raise to make their calls unprofitable. Examples of this type of play are mentioned in the middle of SSH.
