Yeah, it's fine. Make a "$20 bill only" rule and it's even easy to estimate.

We do it at our home games so for me it's quite normal. But if he is the "new guy" in the game he should be prepared to comply with the normal set up of your game, ie no money on the table. When I play in different homes games to my regular one I always play by the house rules.

Actually, the guy pulled out a wad to play with, lost the next hand, and dug deeper for a wad of assorted 10's, 5's and 1's... My only real issue is that it makes estimating a guy's stack hard to do, and raises a major red flag when random joe stops by to say hi. We've since gone to a mildly strict chips only policy, mostly because we have so many new players coming into our games lately.

Don't see why he couldn't play with the chips, as long as you have enough... I agree that it only seems that it could cause problems.
