Varkonyi siting
I wound up siting next to Robert Varkonyi with 2 tables left ITM of a $340 tournament at the Taj.
He seemed to have good technique playing shallow money. He also was precise about poker rules and terminology. He generally had a very professional approach. I have the impression he is a decent tournament player, but that he is aware that winning the WSOP does not make him a top player, hence his playing in $300 tournaments. It was interesting talking with him, although people didn't ask him a lot of questions. The conversations might make semigood gossip, but I don't think it would be right to post them here. |

Re: Varkonyi siting
I met him last year on the rail of the Main Event while he was watching his wife (you can actually see me on ESPN for a split second standing beside him in the sequence where his wife gets eliminated).
Anyway, he was a very nice, approachable guy. Based on his personality, I'd say he deserves the good fortune that has come to him in the poker world. |

[/ QUOTE ] Varkonyi was playing in the big NL game three tables away from mine this weekend at the Borg, where fortunes are commonly made and lost. Did you perhaps consider that the $300 tourny was the only game in town and he is just modest? TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

I know everyone talks about what a weak world champion he is, but I didn't get the impression he was a fish. I know he was from NYC, so I don't know if he lives around AC now or visits regularly. The $300 tournament is the biggest weekly one in AC. |

[/ QUOTE ] TT, did you know that some people, pros even, won't play no limit? They can't handle the swings. But there are others, like Doyle Bruson, who consider no limit the only pure game left. |
